I get that no crystal ball can say how a team will do. But in this case they already knew Miami wouldn't be competitive as the team had pretty much announced that.

I understand they can't be flexed. But I mean, the PTB in charge of scheduling ahead of time take in what they think most people will want to watch...right?

Monday night is no longer the "marquee" matchup of the week. Sunday night is. :229031_shrug:

In the past, Monday Night Football was made up of games featuring playoff teams from the previous year. That was the only way to get a prime time game. Then ESPN started televising Sunday Night Football. The stipulation there was that every team had to be covered with at least one game. This went well for a while. Things changed a bit when parity sunk in and some of those playoff teams weren't as good as they were the year before. MNF started featuring some crappy games while some of the better matchups were on Sunday afternoon. So the NFL swapped MNF and SNF. This allowed for the flexing of key games to a prime time slot while also featuring all teams in prime time for MNF. ESPN tries guessing what the better games will be for Monday night when they make their schedule.

Monday was about marketing and getting the product to the public on prime time, Not always a playoff team but marketing teams with a great fan base many times against others that were up and coming. Pete Rozelle was great at expanding the league marketing it and getting TV revenue as the main stay in supporting the league. Add to that ABC was very astute at creating a broadcast booth with three people, this happened I believe after the first season and we seen Cosell, Meredith and Gifford become the mainstays delivering a non typical type broadcast for the show which took off big time and the viewership exploded, fans were shown and as well as Highlights from the weeks games with Cosell Narrating.

Additionally weird stuff seemed to happen on Monday night which brought another unexpected aspect, add Celebrities visiting the booth and other weekly differences and it was a mainstay for many, many years till the loss of Cosell. He was not a Broadcaster by trade but a Lawyer and had a unique take and delivery for the day which worked. They had replaced Meredith over the years with several retired players Dierdorf being one that worked. But they could not replace the magic Cosell brought.

Disney bought ABC and moved the telecast to ESPN off of Network TV. They could never replace the magic of the original crew and tried to force things which was apparent and failed badly. Gruden made it work somewhat with Berman recently but it was not special anymore.

Back in the day, ABC got first dibs on games for a weekend for the MNF slot.

When things changed, NBC gets prime games, plus the option of "flexing" games to their slot under some restrictions. ESPN doesn't get first picks of matchups. They don't have a lot of leverage when it comes to divvying them up because as a cable provider, they have a smaller potential audience than the other networks.

Opposite world series may have something to do with it.

No, you obviously don't know the history, more like Tomato Potato.

If what you said was true the Seahawks would not have been on Monday Night Football till the Knox era.

IDK, there really seems an opportunity here to get better MNF games. Cable prices even in the '90s were dictated by ESPN, and they're not providing as much value add to those out of market. IDK how it goes, but I'd imagine that even on nonpaid radio they carry the local games.

It's already insulting enough to be paying more for less every year.

So I didn't get it exact. Welcome to the barroom. A playoff team was a very big ingredient. The weird stuff? Yeah, call in the monkeys cuz the rest of the circus is getting kinda boring. Isn't that what that amounts too? ABC didn't want to drop their Sunday night schedule so when Monday Night Football was moved to Sunday night it went to NBC.
I like to try to keep it small. I mean who has time to write some of these Novel sized posts?
And I do agree Disney could have made the ride a bit smoother.

Well, since the Dolphins hold the Stealers' 1st-round pick in the next draft, this gives Miami a chance to win a game while putting themselves in position to hold the #1 and #2 picks in the next draft.

Pretty genius plan they have going.
