Elvis Dumervil asks Denver for release

If he ends up getting released by Saturday, before his $12 million salary is guaranteed, should the Hawks inquire about his asking price? I think he's worth a look; he's healthy and although he didn't have as standard of a season last year, he was productive and got to the QB. If he is released later in the week it would line up with the Hawks' desire to hold back during the first frenzied days of FA.

Since 2006, Dumervil has had some solid success with the Broncos, totaling 170 tackles, 63.5 sacks 16 forced fumbles and nine fumble recoveries.

He led the NFL in sacks in 2009 with 17, but then missed the entire 2010 season due to a pectoral injury. He had 9.5 sacks in 2011 and 11 sacks and six forced fumbles last season, but was being paid quite handsomely for his services.

Apparently, Denver doesn't quite feel his remaining salary is worth it.

Pro Football Focus reports that Dumervil had the third-lowest efficiency rating out of any Broncos player last season. Having said that, the defensive end still finished second on the team in sacks, quarterback hits and hurries.

Of course you bring him in for a look. He's 29, got a few good years left. As long as you don't break the bank on him, he could be a nice piece for a few years. You've also got to look at Abraham, Freeny and the others that are being freed up. Long term, you're looking for another young guy to play opposite Bruce Irvin though.

At this point, like Jester said, bring in all of those aging DEs for a look. Get one (hell, even two) of them to sign short deals and move on.
