Why would they? Why is this a story? $3.4 million is not even a high cap number. The main change the 49ers oline could see is not retaining Iupati. Pretty much everyone else is young and will be there for a long time. The biggest tell regarding Iupati will be whether the 49ers draft a potential guard early. I think letting Iupati walk would be better for them than not retaining Crabtree or Aldon Smith.

I don't see why they would extend his contract right now. He is under contract for another 4 years at very favorable terms for the 49ers. Before anybody says that he isn't making enough and he should be compensated, the Niners front loaded his contract big time. His cap number in 2009 was 14 million.
