This is the first offseason in a while I can remember there being little to no expectations. Usually we do well under those circumstances. When expectations are high, the team does the worst. Maybe we will surprise.

Agreed. It just sucks that 2 of the best players in the game (Altuve, Trout) are in our division (and maybe Verlander being the best pitcher in the AL).

Verlander? Maybe a decade ago.

He reinvented himself last season, but he still is far from being the best. He's probably around the 10th best starting pitcher in MLB.

Astros don't win the world series without Verlander. Sale struggled at the end of the year. Felix past his prime and injured. You could make a case Kluber is better but that's about it.

JV is clutch, and you are right that they probably don't win the WS without him. But I don't think he is a top 5 regular season pitcher. Personally I'd take Kershaw, Sale, Scherzer, Kluber, Severino, and a healthy Syndergaard over JV. But if we are talking about taking one pitcher for a game 7, he might be my choice.

Speaking of pitchers:

Inside James Paxton’s plan to stay healthy in 2018, and what milk (or a lack thereof) has to do with it

PEORIA, Ariz. — Got milk?

For James Paxton, his answer would be, “Well, that depends on where it comes from.”

In his personal quest to pitch an entire season without time spent on the disabled list, reach the elusive goal of 200 innings pitched and being the top-of-the-rotation ace his potential suggests, the Mariners’ Paxton has continued to refine and adjust his offseason and spring training program. The latest aspect of that is a reduction of lactose in his diet.

Following a breakout 2017 season in which he went 12-5 with a 2.98 ERA in 24 starts, Paxton decided to supplement his offseason preparation in search for better durability. He underwent myriad tests, including having blood samples drawn, to determine if changes to his lifestyle, specifically his diet, could lead to improved performance and injury avoidance. Without getting into every single detail, Paxton mentioned one noticeable change made because of the tests.

Who knows if it'll keep him healthy. At least they're trying something. If Pax could give us 25-30 starts, that would help the rest of the staff a ton.

After all the talk about how healthy he is supposed to be.

If the potential Felix injury doesn't light a fire under this FO to get a legit starter, then this season is over in February..

Just bubble wrap every starter and play the AA squad until the season starts.

I like that Levine is calling out the front office / ownership.
