Though I’ll kind of give him a pass because I’m not sure they have much in the way of quality arms, plus Houston tonight probably hits whomever is on the mound .

He doesnt have anyone. He has twiddle dee and twiddle dum. Its easy to blame the manager when you can look at GM.

  • It's obvious this team isn't ready to hang with the big boys. This series has been a massive disappointment. I knew Houston would be tough, but damn. This whole team is turning into a giant wet bag right now. Especially Healy and Smith. I really, really want to like Jay Bruce. I love his demeanor and body language at the plate, but his sub .190 average makes me forget about his 7 homers and 13 RBIs.

I'm ready to see Shed Long called up. I'm curious to see if he'd be able to handle third base. He played a season or two there not too long ago in the Reds farm system I think.

  • Stick with the plan. This is not the season to nit pick about close wins. They played pretty well tonite, all things considered. Verlander is a pitcher for the ages. He has games like that all the time.

I'm not unhappy. Gotta love Brennan and Sadchek blanking them for 3 innings. The home run streak lives on.

    Gotta agree with this post..
We do have pitchers out of the BP that can pitch..Just not enough yet.
We have enough offense but you have games like this with a hot pitcher.
The M's had chances to win..How do you give up 2 Grand Slams?
A win on Sunday would be nice..Oh and Felix? He seems to be doing ok
which is a suprise..I'll take 3 runs any day with the M's offense.

  • Felix is looking like a good 5th pitcher.

Brandon Brennan, Connor Sadzeck, Cory Gearrin, Zach Rosscup, Anthony Swarzak, Roenis Elias

Who gets called up for Wade?

There are some good possibilities here. But, can it be coached up? Put in the right situations? Or will it be just chaos?

I don't think anybody is saying Felix has suddenly recouped his former greatness, but yeah as a back of rotation guy, he's doing fairly well. Gong six against Houston and only giving up 3 runs is a decent outing.

Looks like Swanson. I believe he pitched in relief already...I'm thinking in Japan, maybe. This season is about the young guys, let 'em play and show us what they got. For all the whining around here, I don't really see any chaos. Just some rookie mistakes.

Astros have a GM that understands you need to have superior pitching. Great pitching can minimize great hitting. Astros are a well balanced team. That’s the difference between the Astros and the Ms.

  • I'm not worried a bunch about the final record this year. After the euphoria of the fast start, and the downer of the 'Stros series, I'm reminded that we just saw why we took the "step back." Last year we actually won the season series series against Houston. It didn't do us much good.

So we dumped a bunch of aging vets and a ton of salary with the strategy of rebuilding the farm system and bringing in some "middle aged" players with a future-meaning guys in their late 20's just starting or in the prime of their career age arc. In the guise of "things are never as good or as bad as they seem" we still have a couple of months to see where we really are this year, whereupon we can decide just where we want to go vis-a-vis contending this year versus holding out for next year.

One thing we definitely should NOT do is trade away too much of these good quality AA and AAA players we've brought in for a one and done shot at the playoffs. Frankly, right now I want to develop those young guys when the rosters expand, not trade them away on some vet rent-a-players to try for a wild card game.

I just looked at the transactions. They put LeBlanc on the 10 day and called up Erik Swanson from Tacoma. Leblanc was diagnosed with a grade 2 oblique strain. Sounds like we won't see him for 4-6 weeks, which is a real bummer. Don't know much about Swanson outside of the fact that he was included in the Paxton deal, so I did some research and came across this somewhat encouraging article.

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.lookoutlanding.com/platform/amp/2018/12/17/18128603/erik-swanson-has-a-great-fastball-now-well-see-what-he-can-make-of-the-rest-mariners-pitcher-yankees

He pitched in relief recently and did well for awhile then gave a dooming run. He was sent down after which surprised me considering he looked decent. then Wade Leblanc got hurt. So he is going to start?

Today they had Servais on pre-game and he said Swanson might probably start Wed.

  • Pretty good example of what elite teams do. Houston is elite right now. Better pitching and bench pretty much. I live near Houston and have seen it the last few years.

I was hoping the M's could compete, but when the allowed 2 grand slams in the 1st game I knew what was to be.

I'm still rooting for the M's however.

The M's competed pretty well in two games that series. Losing by one run is hardly getting stomped. :229031_shrug:

I didn't say they got stomped. I said houston is elite, and the M's are not. They got off to a good start and got swept at home regardless of how close the games were. A loss is a loss in the appropriate column, and Houstons pitching took away Seattles bats which had been propelling them.

  • Why are we comparing these two teams. One is a WS contender, the other is rebuilding. Would be like trying to compare the Bills to the Chiefs.

Mariners might get there but for now we are a rebuilding team that overachieved early on.

All I will say is that he has pitched well enough to have won at least two of his outings. He's still transitioning from the Japanese league. Yeah, he' hasn't shown superstar form, but he's got decent stuff.

Slow starter, though, that's for sure.

Yeah, that's a good point about the transition. I feel like it took Hisashi time to transition as well. But regarding his slow starts, I'm getting an early feeling that he'll end up being the Kyle Seager of pitchers. I really, really hope I'm wrong.

I believe it. This team is trash. Forget what they did to get to 13-2. Forget the home run streak. Even with somewhat decent pitching lately, the whole lineup, 1-9, has looked like a bunch of Taylor Motters and Mike Zuninos these last 6 games. This homestand was pathetic.

Swanson was pretty good, though. Quality start, only gave up one run. Not his fault they're swinging nerf bats. :34853_doh:

  • I'm not that surprised the team went from hot to cold. This is MLB, it happens to the best teams. But the pace we were on wasn't sustainable. We were setting records for a team that is rebuilding. We aren't as good as the 13-2 start, but we aren't as bad since this losing streak. We are probably somewhere in the middle, but closer to the latter. On a positive note, Swanson looked really good last night, which is the goal for this team. Young guys do well.
