  • MLB gonna hammer them. Got no choice. They have to make it hurt bad as a deterrent cuz they'll never be able to stop it since they really can't corral the technology without shutting down every camera in the building. Even then, "fans" in the stands, etc.

    I disagree.
If they were so good they wouldn't need to cheat but by cheating it
made them great.I bet if they didn't cheat they do not win that WS
or even go this year..Once the cheating surfaced they couldn't
win this year in the WS?Interesting..We will see just how good
they do next year playing by the rules.

I agree using technology to steal plays or signs is cheating

However, seeing Seahawk fans still say "Cheatriots" is pretty cringe. They've proven they're legit and didn't even need to steal signs. It's a tough pill to swallow but NE is the best run franchise currently.

  • Baseball has been stealing signs forever, you always are trying to figure out the 3rd base coach and if he is sending a guy, or when you have someone on second peeking at the Catcher to try and tip the guy batting on what's coming.

We just have better technology now, you don't need a man on base to get a catchers signs and you can match signals with events to get a 3rd base coach's signs to runner and batters for hit and runs and bunts etc.

Stealing signs is the game within the game when you do it “naturally”.
All teams do it, even at the high school level. Also Pitchers “tip” their pitches a lot more than people realize. A lot of pitchers will position their glove higher or lower depending on what pitch they are about to throw.

But stealing signs via “live technology” is cheating.

Agreed. And no surprise that Alex Cora was the bench coach on the Astros... then he managed the Red Sox !!! Both LA’s losses came from the same cheating coaching staff. Robbed!
I remember watching them in the playoffs and WS... saying to my buddies how crazy it is their whole lineup from top to bottom squares everything up. They smashed the ball. Never a can of corn fly ball. Everything was hard hit on a line. And we were thinking how could they be this good. Well, they cheated!

Think the issue here is that it's a common part of the game. But the Astros used tech to do it...

Seems a harsh penalty, really. But will send the message that old school gamesmanship needs to stay in the century it came about

Stealing signs IS part of the game, we used to do it in upper little league.
You cannot however use technology to do so. That is the issue.

You can combat this by changing signs frequently, but with MLB cracking down on number of mound visits this makes it harder. Though I think you’ll see more “wrist band” systems, where a coach will call out a number which corresponds to pitch on the wristband. Already seeing this at the highschool/upper select baseball level.

  • The more i read about it, the more I think my initial reaction was incorrect.

The scheme was so elaborate it goes far past "if you're not cheating, you're not trying" ethos of old school sports gamesmanship.

This was next level cheating, and the firings and suspensions are an accurate response. I do not know if they will take the Astros title away, but it is certainly under discussion.

I think this is an appropriate response to the growing use of technology in sports as well. Considering how poorly baseball handled it's steroids/performance enhancers issues, this was a surprising and significant proactive response.

Exactly what I was thinking. The players involved should be suspended in addition to Houston being stripped of their title. How many fringe players were hurt by this. Imagine being a pitcher and getting your big break and then getting rocked by the Astros lineup, being sent back down and maybe not getting another shot at the bigs. The whole thing is frustrating and hurts the game and fans of it.
