  • Spring Training is here, everyone is in camp, and so far, so good.

I really like that there's really no hype surrounding this team. I honestly think they have the talent to be a good club, and possibly challenge for the AL West.

This thread is about the 2016 season.

Opening Day is 38 days away!

  • I think we are improved and will contend. IMHO, this season hinges on our starting rotation and their ability to sustain solid outings for the duration of the season. Kuma, Paxton? If they both go down in April (lord help us)?

From interviews I've watched it would appear we finally have a manager who will try to stick with a batting order that works and not change the lineup, Every. Single. Night. This alone makes me believe this might just finally be the year that ends the playoff drought.

  • Yeah, remember, you're talking about the Mariners here. We're probably gonna be competitive for third in the AL west, which would be a storybook season for such a barely mediocre franchise.

  • Good gawd how I hope they can contend this year. I like most of the moves they made in the offseason, but will it translate into wins? You have a new manager with pretty much no experience in that postion. There are so many wildcards and unproven factors going into this year, I can see them being really good or just mediocre again.

  • Being a fan of the Mariners helps us all understand what it's like to be a 49ers fan. They both have ownership interested in acting like they're committed to winning, over actually winning. Mariners are just a smidge better at it.

That's actually the one thing I'm NOT afraid of this year.

The reason the Mariners had so many mendoza-line hitters the past several years is because Seattle relied heavily on their farm system to fill spots and did a very poor job of developing those players. Mike Zunino, Justin Smoak, Dustin Ackley, Jesus Montero, Chris Taylor, and so on. By and large, the holes in the Mariners lineups have been young players that didn't develop.

This year there is only one young player on the Mariners opening day lineup. Ketel Marte, who looked like he was a rising star after his call-up last season. The rest of the lineup is full of veterans with good OBP numbers. Guys that have been getting it done for years. Our worst hitter is probably Iannetta, and he's a guy that had been a good hitter in the past.

I just have questions about the pitching. It's not really any better than last year's pitching staff which was pretty mediocre. A lot of pitching is luck though, and Seattle was pretty unlucky last year.

  • Ugh, bummer to lose that one with Texas only getting 1 hit in the game. Walks and errors in the 5th cost us that one.

Montgomery had a very nice outing out of the bullpen. Struck out the side in the 7th.

  • That loss was so Mariners. Allow one hit and lose. No team has done that since the year 1900 - 116 seasons ago. But despite that, I'll still enjoy and love this team no matter what. I'm going to be doing my best to keep the negativity down, because I actually think this might be the best M's squad (on paper, at least) we've seen in the past 10 years. And remember, the M's have won nine straight Opening Day games, and where has that got them? Maybe they're trying something new this season. It's a long season, and I still have plenty of optimism left.

Felix looked rough today. Unhittable at times, yet totally beat himself with shaky command and giving up a ton of walks. Rough seeing that fastball velo at 89 MPH. That's a far cry from the 97-99 he was registering on the gun nine years ago, but all those pitches and innings have taken their toll. Won't matter much as he is has learned to pitch, but days like today will come more often than they have in the past. I think that arm is gassed, but I really hope I am wrong. I still think he's a top SP in the AL, but the dominance is in question.

  • So Mariners indeed. But I am not worried about Felix at all. It is a bit off-putting that his velocity is so much less than it once was but we couldn't expect that 97+ fastball for the entirety of his career. I think since he has decreased velocity while expanding his arsenal he has become a much more dominant pitcher the past 2-3 seasons.

I did think the same thing re: opening day... Having won so many consecutive openers (dating back to the pre-Felix days), perhaps a change of pace is exactly what we need. Having said that, for the love of god Mariners, please have a winning month of April for a change. We are a team notorious for heating up in August - but by then we have already dug too deep a hole.

I generally like what transacted during off-season (it was tough seeing Wilhelmson in the Rangers' pen though), and here is to hoping for a hot start this year.

Go Mariners. Time to pull the trigger on one of those new-throwback jerseys. :3:

  • Maybe it's good we lost the opener? We always win the opener, play well for a minute, then slip right into Mariners baseball. Maybe this year we lose at first and then catch our stride. just spit ballin here..... Oh well it's golf season, so whatever. Go M's.....

  • In the back of my head I wonder if Felix is slowing down. Last season was his worst statistically. I know a lot of his numbers got inflated from a few bad outings, but you can't ignore the fact he has a lot of innings under his belt and he just turned 30. I think he will be very good still, but I'm not sure he will be a top 3 pitcher in baseball anymore. Two years ago he was always in the conversation for best pitcher, but if I had to choose now I would probably take 5-10 pitchers ahead of him.

They said the same thing about Maddux as he got older. Felix is a very adaptable pitcher. And while he's not hitting mid 90s on his fast ball anymore he still has a ridiculously hard change up, a cutting curve and can brush an insects eye lid with his 91 mph fast ball.

He may not be the same Felix. But I think he will be as effective.

Why are they waiting time pissing off Sonic fans anyways? I doubt basketball comes back anytime soon, so it seems to be a waiste on the Mariners part.

They don't want the competition. Remember that the mariners were the ones that recommended the Clay Bennett group to Schultz when he was looking to sell. They played a major part in helping to remove the Sonics, and thus competition for sports dollars, out of Seattle.

Can't support them till ownership and leadership changes.

A lot of ranking sites don't even have Felix in the top 10 of starting pitchers anymore.

But Felix has 3-4 above average pitches, so it's not like he's going to drop off a cliff because he relies on his fastball 90% of the time like a lot of power pitchers. He'll just have to transition in his 30's to a more finesse style relying on his accuracy and off speed pitches.

Which IMO he already has been doing over the past 2-3 years.

Bottom line for me, I'm not worried about Felix for a while, he's been a workhorse his entire career, so he should continue to be a 15+ wins a year ace.

Completely agreed with everything you said. Felix has shown the ability to adapt his game ever since his velocity fell off a couple years ago. I think he will be very effective pitching into his mid 30's. While he is still an ace, I just don't think he is a top 5 ace anymore. Like you mentioned, he probably isn't a top 10 starting pitcher anymore, but he is still better than most aces out there.

  • Well, if 'Kuma can stay healthy (I know, big if) we still have a pretty solid 1-2 punch at the start of our rotation.

Felix had one bad inning, made worse by two errors, one by one of our best infielders, which gave up 2 unearned runs. Sure, it sucks, but I can't give up on them yet. As was said above, it would be nice to finish April and not be 15 games back already. I don't even care if we have a winning record in April. If we can be within a couple of games of .500 come May 1, I think I'd be ecstatic.

Felix has dropped off a bit, sure, but how many times will he give up 3 walks in one inning going forward? I'd bet a bunch that it won't happen that often.
Talent can get you to the playoffs.
It takes character to win when you get there.

  • What is the deal with Paxton? How come he didn't make the rotation? I've always been really high on him. When he's been healthy, he's been a really good middle/back-end of the rotation guy. His main problem is he can never stay healthy. It's hard for me to get excited for Miley, he has been an average pitcher for the past 3 years now. I doubt much changes with him, he's nothing more than a innings eater. And to be honest, I doubt we would have brought Miley in had we known Iwakuma would fail his physical with the Dodgers and come back to us.
