  • The Zika virus, raw sewage in the water, widespread fraud & corruption, unfinished venues, political chaos, crime, and now dead bodies on the beach. Can we just go ahead and cancel these Olympics now?

  • Are you guys excited for the Olympics?

Seems like with the 24/7 global options for sports we're spoiled with now, the Olympics just don't do much for me anymore..........compared to when I was a kid everyone got really pumped up to watch.

I usually still watch, but the Olympics aren't what it used to be.

  • I am not, and have not been excited about the Summer olympics for decades. I still enjoy the Winter olympics.

The Olympics have really fallen down the list of "must see" events over the years. When i was a kid, Olympic athletes were the sports stars of their generation. Now, they come and go in a 2-3 week window and are all but forgotten by the end of Summer. It's unfortunate, but the rise of professional sports and the adulation (and marketing) of the pro athlete has made the Olympics almost irrelevant it seems.

    Agreed.

The internet and social media has also ruined the Olympics. It used to not matter that it was taped delayed back in the day, now unless you live in a cave with no internet you know who won before the event is aired. I

I don't need to watch Bob Costas talk for three hours of a five hour telecast with his pink eye teasing some event that finally airs at 11:00PM that I already know who won.

Not really because my network channels don't come in half the time so I just learn about it from the internet.

  • Well since the surge in popularity lets say from the 60's on with TV the Olympics has stopped being about the athletes and more about who is holding it and getting the media rights. We rarely see stories about the athletes and the preliminary qualifications anymore. Wide World of Sports was very good about having those events and story's. The would show the qualifications and have the back story on the participants so you got to know them before the Olympics.

  • I'm definitely looking forward to them. The fact that Hussein bolt could step on a drug needle as he's running down the track, and Michael phelps could be swimming in raw sewage just adds to the intrigue. Not to mention the snipers trying to shoot Mosquitos should be entertaining (new Olympic event?)

In all seriousness though, ill be glued to the tv the whole time. Love me some Olympics.

So far ex-Ducks have won the marathon, Mens 10,000, Men's shot put, Men's decathlon and women's 100 meter dash.

  • ^^^ That was awesome to see. Good for her!

I was a swimmer in HS, so I always tune in to see the US qualifiers. Heartbreaking for some of these young athletes who miss the games by fifteen one-hundredths of a second. Man.

I'll admit, the Olympics had more appeal when I was younger - but it is still fun to watch. World records seem to be so short lived nowadays.

  • The environment around the games is chaos. Zika being front and center. The fact that we'll be sending millions of people into ground zero of the virus only to catch it, hop on a plane and head elsewhere is seriously concerning.

Then theres the un finished buildings, the foot bridge which was finished but collapsed shortly after opening, the gang war fair. The dead bodies washing up in the volley ball beach...........

But with all that said. I do LOVE the Olympics, I understand the ones who said they aren't as excited any longer. And your right, now that im old and jaded it's not as special as when I was a kid, but what is?

    i'll be glued to the TV, watching with my boys and seeing the excitement in their eyes. U S A. U S A U S A U S A!

  • Current Ducks wr Devon Allen just won the Olympic trials in 110 meter hurdles. 3rd fastest time in the world this year, has a good chance to medal. He ran 13.03 which would have won him a silver medal in London. Pretty amazing, he tore up his knee in the football playoff against Florida state a year and a half ago.

  • My wife & I were in Fortaliza (sp), Brazil, (at the tip of the Eastern bump out of So. America, South of Rio) a couple of years ago on a Rome to Lauderdale trans-Atlantic cruise. We will NEVER go to Brazil again. We were required to obtain a Visa (about $250-$300 for two people as I recall), even though we were only in port for less than 12 hours.
Prior to this trip we wern't aware that Brazil had a visa requirement. Olympic fans are in for a shock there.

Additionally, The City was extremely dirty & crime filled. 6 passengers and 8 crew members were reportedly robbed and beaten up in just the few hours we were there (some, for walking on the "wrong" side of the street). They appearantly do not accept US-$ or Euro's anywhere, so you have to change money to the local currency with only a few offical money changers. The people we met were often very discourteous to say the least. The Olympic Games should have never been booked there, It's a pretty $h!t destination and again, we'll never go back. $h!t in the water is only a small problem compared to the many others of this backwater country.

Yeah, that seems extremely unwise. I'm having a hard time thinking of a better way to spread a virus globally. Granted, I am not terribly educated on the Zika virus.

Same. My older kids seem to have a genuine interest in the games. Watched all kinds of volleyball, the female bike race, swimming, white water rafting, handball, water polo, a bit of the male gymnastics, even some field hockey. We've actually steered away from the "traditional" team sports like soccer and basketball. It's been fun. Swimming especially.

I am enjoying the swimming too. Women's basketball is more fun to watch than the men IMO. I caught some of the equestrian today and watched two former racehorses compete. Totally cool. There was one horse(who was not a former racehorse)that was 18 years old competing. Awesomness.

Enjoy what you saw with the Final Five you'll never see it's like again thanks to the new rules coming in 2017.

    1. 4 person teams
    2. 3 up no drop
    3. Up to 2 event specialists
    4. 2 per country

Put all that together and all you get is the best unable to complete and a competition more subject to random and swingy results with a lower overall level of talent. All because FIGA is after money given to get those 2 extra spots the gymnasts have to complete in even more official FIGA events. If they would have left it at 6 without the 2 per nation stupidity you get an actual competition and not some participation abomination.

It's mind-numbingly stupid. I have Comcast internet, but can't watch live streaming online because I don't have their TV service. I have Dish for TV, but it's delayed so badly that I have to go to bed pretty much when the 'prime' events are replayed for us. Fell asleep just before 11 last night and the women's 4x200 relay still hadn't been shown.

So I VPN and use CBC's website. Live everything, I don't need to be a subscriber of anything, and I can watch whatever event I want. BBC is the same way. America is the worst at broadcasting. It's embarrassing.

Blame the Execs trying to squeeze prime time rating and advertising, a little National Pride would go a long ways, too bad they and the other 1 percent that control the Networks have no National Pride, just International Greed.

Didn't always used to be this way, they used to show it live and then have a tape replay or a highlights reel of events that we were doing condensed.

  • Simone Manuel just made sure the USA will dominate swimming for the next 40 years. Just like Biles and Riesman have done for Women's gymnastics.

  • I wish ABC had the games. Miss the late Jim McKay and Frank Gifford!

Oh it's still a @#$@@ show. A media bus was opened fire on a day or two ago. They had to close the diving pool down because it turned green and quote from one of the competitors "smelled like a fart"

Athletes have been beaten and robbed.

But the competitions have been awesome, and NBC doesn't focus on the bad stuff. Im more concerned after the closing ceremonies when everyone thats been infected by Zika jumps on a plan and flies home....

  • Living in fear and paranoia is usually what the media outlets are trying to sell you if you are willing to buy it.
