I can't believe all the vitriol against Jack Z and M's management for parting ways with Randy Wolf. This is Randy Wolf not Randy Johnson folks. No major loss. Randy Wolf is a has been, actually no, he is a never was. Not a huge loss at all...most likely a huge gain. They can spend the $1M on something else that may be better for the team in a long run.

It was all over the airwaves on ESPN 710am in Seattle yesterday afternoon too.

Too much talk about a mediocre at best pitcher.

I think the issue is how they did it (at least according to Wolf). Seems bush-league to tell a dude he made the team, but then spring the contract-altering deal that they can release him within 45 days, then suddenly decide he didn't make the team when he doesn't sign it. It's not the kind of thing that will make people want to play here.

It also makes me suspect that Cano was the beginning and ending of their spending, so basically we're wasting Cano's prime years on a crap team, then if the rest of the team around him becomes good, he'll fall off a cliff.

It just feeds into Jack Z's "incompetent bully" persona that he has after that Seattle Times takedown Geoff Baker did.

The problem they have as I see it is perception. The Ms are thought of as a cheap and poorly run organization.

They have been one of the worst run organizations in all of baseball.

Look at when the hired a team president the rumors were that Tony LaRussa was going to be interviewed. Did they? No he started they never called...

Why? IMO because they value bean counters more than baseball people that may well not be just yes men to ownership.

People just look at it as another move by a cheap organization.

It's hard to quibble they are wrong when without a salary cap losing a guy you had penciled in as a starter

This occurs less than a week before the season opener even worse are the number of the first months games inside the division.

Lose a lot of them and you are in a big hole and like must years are irrelevant by the fourth of July

Danny on espn 710 tried to play the role of mariners apologist by claiming that the Seahawks do the same thing the difference is the cap. baseball dose not have one a big difference

This wasnt a move by a "cheap organization" regardless of how people want to perceive it. We signed him to a 1 million dollar contract (not massive money) if he made the team.

He's been sh-- in Spring training. But they felt they needed him due to the injuries, and then would likely drop him to AAA once Iwa and Walker were ready. They offered him the 45 day deal with the chance of renegotiating the million dollar deal

Cheap? maybe... but they clearly dont see Randy as the pitcher they need for the whole season. They made him an offer (albeit in a shady, yet often used manner). reality is: Randy Wolf was not making this team as a starter if Iwa and Walker were healthy (you can thank Erasmus Ramirez, James Paxton and Roenas Elias for helping that along). because the Ms dont know their overall status through April, they offered him this "pro-rated" version of the million.

He refused and we all move on...

Yep if anyone should be getting hammered here its Wolf's agent and Wolf for sucking....

I don't necessarily care because hey, it's Randy Wolf, but I do think it feeds a narrative that makes it hard for both fans and free agents to take this team seriously (well, unless you give a dude 10/225 because that would make pretty much anyone start listening).

Uncle Si is absolutely spot on. If Randy Wolf would have earned his spot with his performance then this would have been shady. As it sits, he didn't play well enough to earn a spot. He technically got it by default. Thus, I see where the club is coming from and have no issue with what they did. Good to see they aren't throwing money at a useless pitcher. That would be a bigger waste. What they did to Jon Garland last year is was much worse than what they have done to Wolf. Garland actually pitched well. They should have signed him. That was Jack Z's bigger mistake.

Plus it sends the right message. Robinson Cano earned his contract. Thus he is getting paid. Randy Wolf didn't earn anything, thus shouldn't be given a guaranteed contract. The message is, if you play well and earn it you will get money. I, for one, like that message.
