  • I have a whole bunch of friends from Washington on facebook who are whining about snow. We deal with this crap EVERY winter in Michigan. Whaaaaa....Boo. Hoo. One friend is whining about having to shovel and wipe snow off his car. I just bust out laughing. I can't help it. And for the record, I hate snow too but I live where it is the norm in January. It gets unbelievably hot and humid some summers out here too. The only time of the year when it is nice is during the Fall for maybe a month if we are lucky. People from Washington are pretty lucky to live in that environment. In the west near the Pacific, you get that mild maritime climate and east of the mountains it is dry and the summers are so comfortable. The Winters East of the mountains it gets cold but very rarely snows. It's just too dry. I only remember over an inch of snow one time in my 8 years living in the Yakima Valley.

  • I have some friends in the Portland area that haven't been able to work for a couple days now. One told me an official measurement was 13.5 inches. Not bad I'd say.

As an avid snowboarder, I pray and wish and dance for as much snow as possible from November through March. The real problem for a lot of Washington (and I'd assume elsewhere) is that it almost completely shuts down cities and towns that don't have the equipment to deal with it.

I was talking to some friends on the west side of the mountains and one down in California, and they were shocked that here in North Central WA even if we get feet of snow we're expected to be to school or work. With all that said, screw living in the Midwest. I spent a week in Minnesota for Christmas one year and the average temp. we experienced was -20. You know it's cold when you walk outside and everything in your nostrils immediately freezes, getting from the front door to your car, from your car to the office and vice versa is actually serious business, and not even kids go out to play in the snow.

Ice fishing was fun as hell, though.

Yea, i'm a substitute teacher, so if there's no school i make no money. So far this snow, and the ice storm last week, and the snow before christmas vacation have cost me over $900. And i cant afford to lose $900. Really wishing it would go away, or I might have to go out and do some prostitution or something.

  • After finally getting my blade back on the quad, I bladed part of my driveway when I did not get stuck and have to dig out. At the end of it, I thought about digging out my skis and boots and going for a little bunny hill run. Problem is the end of the run would be a jump a bit against my taste. I got about 18-24 inches depending on where you put your foot down. I have about 8 inches on my driveway still and my driveway to the road is gonna be ice, water, mud, and slick or mucky for the next few weeks. Me going to McCall may not happen in 3 weeks.

  • We got 7 inches on Sunday alone here in Yakima Valley. That was on top of the 5-6 inches that were already on the ground. Snow drifts over 8 feet high. I have never seen snow like this in the valley, but I've only been here a handful of years.

  • Tri Cities is snowy too. We're an 1 1/2" from our all time record... It's like 5 degrees here today, but the part that scares me is that it's supposed to warm up to 45ish next week, which means this place is going to flood. The Yakima river will probably be real fun.

  • Snow is easy to deal with. Especially here in Montana where the dot has the resources and equipment to deal with it. It's the flipping cold that is hard to deal with for me. Just wears me out. 2 weeks or so in a row where it never gets above 5 degrees below zero gets tiresome. We haven't had that stretch this year yet, but it has hit 26 below and it has been cold as hell the past week.

My girlfriend and I agreed that this was the last winter we spend here.

I lived in the Yakima Valley from 1976-1984. I never once saw more than 2 inches of snow during that time. I can see why all of my friends on Facebook are whining with Michigan-like weather going on. I am sure they don't have the winter road help like we do(DOT, salt, plowtrucks from county budgets, etc.).
Come to think of it, snow was never a normal occurrence at all. If it is really that cold, expect cracking of the roads and lots of repairs during the spring/summer.

Yeah, that river floods easily. We're expecting warmer temps too so I won't be surprised to see a lot of road closures in and around Yakima.

The I82 and Hwy 12 are kept up surprisingly well through all this. And most of the main streets in downtown Yakima are decent, but as soon as you go out of city limits or on the side roads it's awful. They've had to employ farmers and construction companies to clear some spots up with tractors and heavy equipment. I don't know where all this money is coming from because after 21 inches of snowfall since the beginning of December, they're probably checking in the couch cushions and under car seats for spare change.

    Right.

I'll never forget the winter of '08. I was on the last plane to make it into SeaTac the day before Christmas - the big snowstorm that year was just starting. Went to the Jets game, watched Josh Wilson throw snow and some fan nail Ellis with that big chunk as he was walking back into the tunnel. Then Mom couldn't get out of lower Seattle because she drives a tiny Cavalier.

For the next two weeks, every left-turn lane, driveway, and parking lot in Western Washington was a slushy mess and I was the only one in town who seemed to know how to drive. They wouldn't salt the roads, of course, because it's bad for the environmeeeeeennnnttt, and in general they didn't have near the coordination for any of it. So...yeah. Pretty funny.

Here in Montana it's been the strongest winter we've had since '96, two feet of snow at any given point, and we still haven't had a snow day that I'm aware of.

The terrain looks flat as a pancake around Adams, NY. Try driving in icy conditions up a 22-degree grade street in downtown Seattle.

That being said, yes, people are wusses here about snow and ice; but there are also very few urban areas that have anywhere near the steep level of terrain that Seattle does which can get snow and ice. Places that don't have "real winters" also don't have anywhere near the equipment to keep up with it in terms of snow plows and salting the roads.
