Mount Rushmore of American Musicians
Sun Oct 02, 2016 7:34 am
  • On a recent road trip, my girlfriend and I were talking about music. I came up with the idea to try to figure out who would be on the Mount Rushmore of American music. I am nearly certain that I am the first person in the whole wide world to ever come up with this incredibly original idea.
Anyway, no one cares about "rules" in fun thought experiments like this, but my thought is that it should be limited to four and that it should be people, not bands.
Do you judge based on popularity or talent? I leave that up to those who wish to participate. Personally, I go with talent. No disrespect to people who like Elvis, but if you ask me, he doesn't hold a candle to someone like Bob Dylan when it comes to talent.
Anyway, what do you guys think?

  • I saw Queens of the Stone Age live once. Years and years ago. Nobody I knew had ever heard of them at the time. Myself included. Their sound guy was shit, but the music shone threw and I really liked them. Never enough to call myself a fan exactly, but it's cool when a new band's music can leave a mark despite certain disadvantages.

  • That's tough - so many genres and styles within those

Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Robert Johnson, and George Gershwin, maybe?

My girlfriend brought one up, though, that I think is a no-brainer.
    Michael Jackson.
He's probably the biggest deal in American music ever.

  • Like Riley said, lots of genres. I'm an old school R&B guy so I'm taking, Robert Johnson, Chuck Berry (The true king of R&R!), and Dylan & Simon for writers.

  • too many genres..youd need to do a Mt Rushmore of Pop, of Rock, Jazz, etc..because seriously..how do you even compare, say, Michael Jackson and Charlie Parker..?

Jimmy Hendrix, Aretha Franklin, John Williams and Bob Dylan.

We thought of this. Frankly, it's a much easier task. I wanted the more difficult task of encompassing all genres.

    Michael Jackson
    Charlie Parker or Louis Armstrong
    Johnny Cash
    Bob Dylan

......and then have Robert Johnson's ghost, Elvis revenant come after me..and send sincere apologies to Bob Dylan..

  • From a pure talent standpoint? I'd put John Mayer up there against anyone. Never really liked his music but just watch him go toe to toe with the likes of Clapton and BB King. Dude's an unreal guitarist.

  • Can't believe nobody has mentioned Stevie Wonder yet. Dude is pure genius. Someone else mentioned Freddie Mercury. I would agree with this one, but the topic is "American" musicians. I'd go Stevie Wonder, Elvis, Michael Jackson. Not sure about the 4th one though. Not sure if there's anyone quite in the same class as these 3.

Stevie is in my "next group" along with Jackson, Cash, Little Richard, James Brown, Miles, Aretha, Don Henley, Sinatra, etc. Remember, we were only allowed 4.

Obviously this is all just bar stool opinion stuff..but a list like that..and those are all WONDERFUL artists (though I agree with someone elses thinking that Id probably put Stevie Wonder in the next tier, especially in light of his later day musical crimes).. anyway, a list like that excludes two entire GENRES of music that are thoroughly American.. jazz and country. Im not a fan of country music, but its so influential..and jazz..well.. JAZZ!

  • Elvis and Michael are the kings. Any list without them is utter nonsense. I probably go Frank and Ray next. Aretha, Jimmy, Stevie, Alicia and a few others are also gods. You could make a case for Dr. Dre and Russell Simmons very easily. Props for the Ryan Adams reference.
