  • I'm probably the world's oldest and most naive newbie Metallica fan. I only first heard "Nothing Else Matters" a couple of years ago, and I was simply instantly stunned by its towering majesty. I tend to love ballads by metal bands ("Changes"/Black Sabbath in particular) - but I don't like ANY other Sabbath I've heard much, sorry.

However, I bought Metallica's "Black" album on CD, and love all of it, particularly also "Unforgiven" and "Wherever I May Roam".

But, I've listened to some of their new album, "Hardwired" on Youtube, and what I have heard is just too "thrashy" for my elderly ears.

So, my question is - can anyone recommend any of the other eight Metallica studio albums? Is there any live stuff?

    Thanks!

  • It sounds like you wouldn't like any of their old stuff, which to me, is their best. Master Of Puppets is simply brilliant but hardcore. My favorite album is And Justice For All.

  • I started with the black album in 1990 when I first started listening to Metallica so you are starting in the same spot just decades later. You're best bet is to work backwards from the Black album and buy their older albums closest to it. I would say you are most likely to like And Justice for All and Master of Puppets but all their albums before the Black album will have songs you really like. The same is probably true for the most recent albums. The closer to the black album you get in release date, the more likely you are to like more of the album.

Here are some individual songs you might like from various albums

One - And Justice for all
Fade to black - Ride the Lightning
Call of Ktulu (instrumental) - Ride the lightning
The thing that should not be - Master of Puppets
    Orion (instrumental) Master of Puppets
Welcome Home (Sanitarium) - Master of Puppets
To Live is To Die - And Justice for All
And Justice For All - And Justice for All

As far as live albums go you can't go wrong with Metallica S&M which is them performing with an Orchestra. As a matter of fact you might want to start with this album because it is them performing various songs from various albums. This is also available on DVD.

  • ...And Justice For All is def my favorite of all their albums. Based on what you said you liked above, since you don't want overly thrashy... here is stuff from their older works:

For Whom the Bell Tolls (Ride the Lightning)
    Escape (Ride the Lightning)
Fade to Black (Ride the Lightning)
    Sanitarium (Master of Puppets)
    Leper Messiah (Master of Puppets)
Orion (Master of Puppets)... one of my all time favorites
    One (And Justice For All)
Harvester of Sorrow (And Justice For All)

Also, Spit Out the Bone from the new album is great. I don't care what anyone says.

  • Hi everyone who replied to me here,

One - And Justice for all
Fade to black - Ride the Lightning
Call of Ktulu (instrumental) - Ride the lightning
The thing that should not be - Master of Puppets
    Orion (instrumental) Master of Puppets

Sorry, these are the only tracks I liked from these three albums, and they aren't much compared to the songs I love on the "Black" album. "Nothing Else Matters" towers over everything, but I guess I'm not a real Metallica fan.

My ears are maybe simply too damned old - no criticism of Metallica!

  • I'm pretty sure the members of Metallica all died in a horrific plane crash in 1991 and were replaced by imitators.

Aussie Seahawk, your elderly ears may not have heard Corey Taylor before. Give this a try:

  • I like Metallica's old stuff...pre Black Album. I respect them for going in another direction with their sound, but they had a spectacular 1980s thrash metal sound.

Nah, they did what all rage and angst filled young men do after becoming insanely rich and successful..............they get fat, happy and no longer have that edge that made them great.

...And Justice For All was the album I grew to love Metallica from. I listened to that all summer, all I listened to. Then moved backwards on my journey. Master, Lightning, and then Kill em All.

The Black album (for me) was just too polished, and lacked some energy for lack of a better word.

Anyway, IMHO if you had to boil Metallica down to 3 albums?

    Ride the Lightning
    Master of Puppets
    ...And Justice For All

    Done.

Pretty much would have to agree with that. I do like the black album, but Justice is my favorite.

Garage Inc was a good set, too. Metallica does some great covers (all of Garage Days), and the newer stuff also. Their cover of Astronomy is one of my favorites ever.
