$50 Bounty! Identify this song from the TV show Dexter

The Lounge is for non-sport-related topics other than politics, war and religion. Order up your favorite beverage, kick back and enjoy the conversation! LANGUAGE RATING: PG-13
  • Below is the original post. I've been trying to identify this song for a year-and-a-half now, to no avail. Someone PLEASE help me out. I will pay $50 USD to the first person that can successfully identify it. I promise you I'm good for it.

I'm obsessed with this. I can't identify this song for the life of me, I've spent HOURS searching online, and there are other people trying to find it online as well. I've embedded an unlisted clip I put on YouTube so you can hear it. It's from season one, episode 11, about five-and-a-half minutes in.

Here's what people think the lyrics are, though I can't vouch for the accuracy of them: "Porque tocan nuestra canción. Balada de los dos, sufro mas."

Can ANYBODY help me identify this? Seriously, I'm offering a $50 reward, I'll PayPal it right over to the first person who accurately identifies this song. It's driving me nuts.

My hope is that someone here who actually speaks Spanish can verify the lyrics, then search the Spanish version of Google, Spanish lyrics sites, etc. to find the song. I've tried doing that using Google Translate, but no luck and without knowing the accuracy of the translations and such, it's a borderline impossible task.

  • I checked out the typical places I go to find music from TV and noticed you also commented there asking if anyone knew the song haha

Sorry, seems like they have a lot of Cuban music not included as 'soundtracks.' Even the official website only has a handful of songs listed.

  • I tried one of those android apps that can hear music and tell you what the song name is but it had no clue.

Wouldn't it be on the credits for that show? I'll look around.

Season one, episode 11. Which my opening post also says. ;)

Well if anybody can find a way to identify it or have someone else do so, I'll find a way to reward you, I really am obsessed with it at this point.

The music director of that episode even replied to an email I sent him (Internet stalking FTW) but he had a hard drive crash years ago and lost the info. Freaking figures.....

Yes, that's me; and yes, I did. I'm actually offended that you even asked that. I Googled them and many variations all over the place, for HOURS, combing through search results.

  • Could be in this bunch, at work so can't look up each one by title, but this is music associated searching. The write up for these comes under this. Could be in 2 - 11.

The album contains 25 tracks over 1 hour and 4 minutes. Track 1 is the opening theme by Rolfe Kent. Tracks 2 through 11 are mostly Cuban and Latin music used during the show, with tracks 2, 6 and 9 containing narration by Michael C. Hall. Tracks 12 through 24 were written by Daniel Licht, who composed all of the show's other themes. Bonus track 25 is track 24, "Blood Theme", with Jon Licht singing over. Kent's widely praised opening theme utilises an eclectic selection of European and Asian instruments, including ukulele, piano, bouzouki, trumpets, pizzicato strings, electric piano, saz, and tambour, set to an Afro-Cuban beat. Licht's original themes are based around a mixture of Latin and electronic music, reflecting Dexter's warm and cold elements.[2]

    1."Dexter Main Title" (Rolfe Kent) – 1:40
2."Tonight’s the Night" (Michael C. Hall, Daniel Licht) – 1:07
    3."Conoci La Paz" (Beny Moré) – 3:03
    4."Uruapan Breaks" (Kinky) – 2:21

    24."Blood Theme" (Daniel Licht) – 2:25
25."Die This Way" (Daniel Licht, Jon Licht) – 3:55

Someone had a youtube playlist with all those songs so I listened to them a couple days ago and none of those are it. I figured one of those would be it too.

  • Trench,

I already reached out to him. He responded, which is cool; but he lost all his data in a hard drive crash years ago and has no clue who it was. :(

I'm getting screwed at every turn.

Chris: I listened to the entire discography of all Dexter soundtracks, it's not anything included in that.

  • Have you tried contacting the person that was in charge of music clearance for getting the usage license? She would probably have more info than anyone else.

    Jeanne Fay
    Clearance Consultants

Seems like a pretty small business (probably independent) as there's no website or email and the address looks like a residence, but she's worked on a lot of popular stuff.

Believe it or not, I've actually been considering this; but I'd need to make a new YouTube account to do it under. One more strike and my account gets disabled, thanks to a few short NFL clips getting noticed by the Nazis - I mean, attorneys - for the NFL.

I did contact the primary music person for the show at that time, his name is Gary Calamar, and he was kind enough to respond; but his piece of **** MacBook had a hard drive crash and he lost years of data and has no clue what songs were used for his time on Dexter. Let this be yet another example for you people, BACK YOUR STUFF UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I doubt it, Daniel Licht did all the music composition for the show and that's orchestral stuff; throughout the entire show's run, they regularly used a lot of actual Latin/Hispanic music. I'm pretty sure this is a real song.

  • It sounds Cuban to me, and I bet it's local....

Wouldn't surprise me if it's an original from Salsa D'Esquina or Omara Portuondo or one of those acts.

Of course it could always be something stupid, some Latin pop by Marta Sanchez.... that's who I thought it was at first listen.

Sorry, no help. Been going through my Latin music collection and I can't find it.

  • Bump. I am upping the bounty on this to $50 USD for the first person that can successfully identify it. Seriously - fifty bucks cash, through Paypal, Venmo, however you prefer.

I'm 100% serious. A year-and-a-half later and I'm still trying to track this song down.

    Wow.

    2)you haven’t found it yet.

  • Sounds silly, but I've unknowingly found songs I've missed/forgot about through Pandora. If you know of a song that sounds really similar, use that to start a channel. This might be long and painstaking, but so has the process so far lol.

  • If I had over 30 seconds of the song playing I may be able to identify it.

I can’t help, just had to let you know I’m surprised.

    Thanks for, err...not a damn thing. :(

I thought about trying to do this, but I don't know of any songs that are even similar, much less really similar. :( Any suggestions along that front would be welcome...lol.

Tell me about it. Unfortunately the guy in charge of choosing music had his Crapintosh die and lost all his data from that time, and the main guy in charge of creating music died. :(

Sounds like you need to brush up on some voodoo and resurrect the dead guy.

  • So is this just a case of being obsessed with something you know is kind of dumb? Or is there actually a reason for wanting to know the name of this particular song? Just curious cause the "why" hasn't really been answered

This is absolutely obsession. It's not like I think that intro is the greatest thing in the history of music; it just stuck with me, and it's used well in the context of that episode of Dexter and the show itself, and it's not leaving my freaking mind - ever, apparently.

Yes; and Shazam, and Google Play Music. All three failed to identify it. Granted, I tried those three just before I first posted this, and that was a year-and-a-half ago; I'll try it again soon just in case I might get lucky, but at this rate, I sincerely doubt it.

There isn't enough to identify the song with those apps. I'm just glad it isn't me who's dealing with the obsession.

  • I can feel your pain Roland. Many years ago when I was with my band living in NYC there was this one song I used to love listening to. As years rolled by I long forgot the name of the band and the song name.

All I have to this day that I can recall are these lyrics:

"...I hate to complain but it sure looks like rain."

It was a rock band, I think in the vein of Extreme...Late 80's, early 90's. More of a rock ballad than heavy...

    Sigh.

    Did you google those lyrics?

Yes, that's me; and yes, I did. I'm actually offended that you even asked that. I Googled them and many variations all over the place, for HOURS, combing through search results.

    Geez, Si. ;)

But did you Bing it? Or Yahoo it? Maybe try Alta Vista?

  • I kind of have this same problem also in regards to some latino music. There is this Mexican band that a co-worker would play all day in the back area of a restaurant I worked at during my teenage years that I really liked.

    Here's what I know:

    * They were from the 70s (maybe early 80s?) I think

    * They used a lot of 'cheesy' sounding synthesizer/keyboard effects...those are hard to describe. However, I have a reference...listen to the song 'Because' by The Beatles, and at the very end you can hear the same sounding effect that this Mexican band used a lot. Apparently it's called a Moog Synthesizer. But the sound The Beatles made on that song is identicial to the sound this Mexican band used in many of their songs.

    * I don't know any of the lyrics because I don't know spanish. Lyrics are unimportant to music anyway. As long as you sing something where the words fit comfortably with the notes you're singing, that's all that matters.

This co-worker will not respond to my facebook messages asking him what band that was. I've tried, and then I get the 'seen' notification but then no response...you know, like what happens when you message a hot girl (except he didn't block me).

Since Roland's request appears to be a lost cause, let's focus on solving my mystery. It should be easier because this was definitely a band that was popular in Mexico. I hacve

  • I asked a friend who speaks Spanish. She doesn’t recognize the song either. She said she thinks maybe the singer is not a native Spanish speaker, as she hears an accent.

Sorry I can’t be of more help.
