  • I bought these fresh, we ate a few, I took the heads off and froze the rest.

I envy y'all that live in the PNW for your access to Crab & Salmon but I'd put "gulf shrimp" up against any in the world.

    Image
These are sized @ 12U, meaning that there are under, or appropriately 12 per Lb.

Trying to decide how I'm gunna cook these.
If the lil Lady was home they would be going on the grill (her fav), I'm alone tonight. I think I'm going to make a pasta dish.

Tomato, shallots, fresh basil, garlic and some white wine.
Sweat till "saucy" , and wine cooked off, toss in the Shrimps, tablespoon of tomato paste and a stick of butter.
Sauté till shrimps are cooked, and finish with a splash of heavy cream.
Lay the whole thing over some pasta with a dash of ghost chili powder.

Dang, sure hope I don't run out of beer.

    :{)

Edit: Coke can is for perspective, I drink beer.
And if you take the time to learn the "ropes"
these can be had for $5.99 a Lb. it's hard to buy ground beef (hamburger) for that price.

  • Yum. Shellfish is my wheelhouse. Crab, Lobster, Prawns....YUM.

I do feel spoiled born and raised and living in the great Pacific Northwest for fresh seafood but I have to tell you what's been rocking my world lately isn't anywhere near the Pacific Northwest.

The Safeway by my house has had Argentina Prawns for about a year. Holy crap those are amazing! Taste like eating mini lobster tails. Every person I've turned them onto totally agree.

Now I need to go get some.

  • I'm diggin' your recipe medic.

I make a mean shrimp bigoli, except I throw in some calamari like this pic. I also try and make the pasta fresh if I can, but that's hard sometimes, requires more time.

Restaurants leave the tails on cause it makes it look fresher and prettier. But no, when I make my Bigoli, I don't leave the tails on.

My wife is not a fan of shellfish or salmon. About the only type of fish she likes are things like Cod and Halibut (Whitefish). For that reason, I don't often get shrimp, but this thread had made me miss having them, and coincidentally, the Argentina Prawns Aros mentions happen to be on sale this week, so I think I'm going to have to just do it.

  • Lon, they're PRAWNS, dammit, not shrimps! No-one in Australia puts a "shrimp" on the barbie, despite what a has-been golfer tried to tell you in past tourism ads. :)

To us South Australians, a "shrimp" is a delicately built, small freshwater crustacean, with tiny nippers you can hardly feel in the unlikely event they "attack" you - out of the water they collapse into a blobby heap, they are so fragile.

But... yours sure do look damn TASTY! :D

I'd join you with many beers at your lakeside home in a heartbeat!

I stand corrected, Roland, thank you. Honestly had no idea about these differences and facts. Plus I misremembered the tourism ads being done by Greg Norman, when it was in fact Hoges.

Not semantics. Facts. You'd agree with me if someone called a safety a cornerback...They're both DBs and similar in many respects but they're not the same!

  • Speaking of shrimps, the most formidable (if it really "is" a shrimp - the various species are all stomatopods) is the mantis shrimp. Has anyone here kept one in a tank, or knows someone who has? Their powerful front leg pairs ("smashers" or "spearers" in various species) can break a normal glass aquarium wall, or cause serious hand injuries if they are mishandled. Most complex eyes, and fastest reflexes, in the animal kingdom.

Vicious, grumpy and voracious, apparently... but they are gorgeous. Kinda love to get one, but would have to research how to "make" sea water for an aquarium, which I have zero clue of. I would never take responsibility for the keeping of a creature, of whatever phylum, if i did not know what I was doing.

AND, I doubt my wife would let such a creature into the house!

I'd never heard of a mantis shrimp until I read Warren Fahy's books, featuring a malevolent variation of the (unique local evolution) Galapagos.
