Ready Player One

  • First trailer dropped at SDCC yesterday.

Anyone else really looking forward to this? I read the novel about 4 years ago and have been excited for this adaptation ever since. While not my first choice to direct (I was hoping for Edgar Wright), this is right in Spielberg's '80s wheelhouse. I like what I'm seeing.

  • I was a little disappointed by the book, found it more towards the sophomoric and juvenile side of things.

But I like what I see in the trailer, looks like Spielberg and his director have added some much needed grit and complexity to the story.

  • I was wondering, did anyone else catch that the instrumental music at the start of the trailer, plus the three-note tone played over the the title were an arrangement of Pure Imagination from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory?

  • The use of Pure Imagination in the first trailer was a nice touch, as was the little chime/jingle from Back To The Future at the end of the new one. Really hoping this isn't just a mess of CGI action. Looks pretty cool though.

Funny though, the novel (I read it about 3 years ago) was distinctly about 80's pop culture, yet in this trailer there's a lot of 90's and even 2k stuff.

    Example:

2:05 --- Commander Shepard (Femshep)!!!! Right behind Chun Li... There was no mention of Mass Effect or Street Fighter in RPO ....

  • Have we had any sightings of TJ Miller's character yet in any of these trailers? He's supposed to be like a Boba Fett type character but I can't imagine they'll keep him in a helmet the whole time. If we've seen him in any of these so far I missed it.

He plays i-Rok whos basically a troll. Minor character in the book, only a few appearances but has an impact on the story.

Im fine with them throwing in other decades of pop culture. While the novel mostly referenced 80's stuff, that was because Wade was into that stuff as was the creator of the world. However anyone can make anything they want so it would make sense that youll see stuff like a bunch of master chiefs running into the big battle like in the 3rd trailer.

  • The book mentions countless pop culture universes that are represented in OASIS. I wonder how much of that (Star Wars, Star Trek) etc. is a problem to reproduce in the movie due to copyright issues. That, and for familiarity for younger movie goers, might be why we are seeing so many modern Icons in the Trailers. I even saw an Overwatch character in there. I am very excited for the movie!

It's exactly that, it's Klein's homage to his love of everything 80's.

I didn't love the book as much as some, but as a child of the 80's it's hard for me not to love anything with dozens of 80's references to video games and pop culture.

  • This is just my opinion so don't hurl stones. Feces, maybe, but no stones. The book was built on nostalgia and had a weak and convoluted arc for some of the characters. It seriously felt as though it relied far too much on it's 80's references that never went anywhere or were there for the thin plot it as trying to work with.

Now all that being said, I'm definitely going to see the movie. I simply hope it's a littler better than the book.

I feel you on the book, although I enjoyed it well enough. I think that the chances of the movie being better are quite slim, however. I wouldn't get your hopes up.

    Then it started falling apart.

  • They filmed a lot of the communal battle scenes in London around the financial district. I saw some fight scenes being filmed personally. About 30 extras just flailing about while wearing the headsets.

  • Went last night to see it. Good flick, they went a little heavier on the love story than the book. Lots of changes from but didnt bother me to much. Mostly it was just a great visual and audio experience. We went to the Dolby Digital non 3D showing at AMC Southcenter, rumbly seats and amazing surround sound.

  • Saw it this afternoon. The best part to me was the final battle, I loved it. What frustrated me, however, was the first challenge. I have no problem with them changing the challenges from the book. I get watching someone play Joust wouldn't make for much excitement, but in the book, the clue to the first challenge was so cryptic that no one solved it for 5 years. There is no way, with billions of people crawling over all of Halliday's data with a fine tooth comb, no one would have solved a riddle like the replacement in the film inside of the first month, guaranteed. It took me out of it, honestly, and it took awhile for me to get back in. The cast did great, especially Ben Mendelsohn, who is turning into an A-list Hollywood antagonist. He was quite good as Nolan Sorrento. Spielberg isn't quite the director he was even 10 years ago, let alone his peak 20-30 years ago, but 50% Spielberg is still better than 90% of current directors. 7/10.
