  • I remember it like it was yesterday. I could see the plume of ash from my house in Kent, WA. I remember ash covering everything for weeks after.

  • I was living in Chattaroy Wa. (North of Spokane)

Had been outside all day building a round pen for training colts and hadn’t heard any news.

I could see the highway off in the distance and started to notice dust flying up from the cars, then I felt and tasted grit in my mouth.

    Was the strangest thing ever.

An hour or so later one of the people that boarded a horse at my place came by and told me that She had Blown.

I remember that part like it was yesterday.

  • Was fishing in the sound off Edmonds, we could not get anything to bite, even Dogfish were not hitting herring which is really unusual. We heard a boom in the distance and then we felt a ripple where the boat a 14 footer was hit coming from shore not out from the straight. never thought about it till we got home and saw the news, Friends said all the windows rattled.

  • Yeah, that's a day you never forget. Was living in Olympia at the time, and we got up on your roof and watched from a distance. I'll never forget all the ash everywhere, people wearing masks, putting towels at the door to try to keep it out etc.

  • Wasn't born yet, but the pictures, videos and testimonies are always so surreal. Seriously, that picture is incredible, Aros.

  • My mom and dad got married May 17th, 1980.

Kinda wound up being a metaphor for their marriage.

  • Never get tired of hearing stories about where and what people were doing when Mt St Helens erupted.

38 years ago, and people still take the time to recall and describe their experience as if it happened yesterday. Must have been quite the thing.

First continental US Eruption recorded I believe, there have been seam vents releases in many but not a eruption.

Well, my brother was born in April of '81, so it definitely wasn't him. The timing is off.

  • I remember it like yesterday.

mr dbmack lived in California at the time. He didn't know it blew until he moved here in '96. It has to have been on the news down there but he doesn't remember hearing about it.

  • What was surreal was when it re-opened to the public. My Boy Scout troop went down there and hiked up to the new summit at the rim of the crater the year they re-opened, then we camped a couple nights on one of the neighboring hills. At points it was like what I imagine walking on the moon is like.

It was all over the news. We talked about it in MI. I think we even had a sample of the ash in my science class.

  • I remember going to the Nike Missile base in Redmond as it was the highest point in Redmond.
We climbed an old missile silo tower to be even higher to see the plume.
