  • Necessary Roughness is a good one. I like both Field of Dreams and Bull Durham.

Also, fun fact, Angels in the Outfield has a SHOCKINGLY good cast. 2 of the team members went on to win a Best Actor oscar (Matthew McConaughey and Adrien Brody), and it also featured Joseph Gordon Levitt in his first starring role, and an early appearance by prolific character actor Neal McDonough.

Yep, have a hard time respecting the OP for not thinking of Hoosiers. But tip of the cap to Teen Wolf. So I guess Teen Wolf 2 would a favorite boxing movie????

I kid, I kid. Sort of.

It's fun to watch older movies and TV shows and see actors who went on to hit it big, but who weren't big at the time.

Technically sports movies, but I've never really thought of them as sports movies. Certainly, Rocky more than Raging Bull. Raging Bull is not defined by the boxing in it.

  • It was a TV miniseries, not a movie, but "Howzat" was great. It will mean nothing to Americans! It's about the beginning of World Series Cricket here in Australia, financed by the late Kerry Packer. Cricketers were paid peanuts, and the revolution was a tumultuous time, leading to much greater professionalism. Typical pithy Aussie series. BTW, "Howzat!" is a classic way to appeal to the umpire that a batsman is out. It was also a hit song in the 70s by an Australian pop band called Sherbet, who had a spectacularly unsuccessful attempt on the US market as "Highway".

Actually, the only American football movie I've ever seen was "Any Given Sunday" which I really enjoyed. I must check out others mentioned here. I enjoyed "Eddie the Eagle" - about Eddie Edwards, who represented Great Britain in skijumping in the 1988 Winter Olympics, finishing dead last on both hills, with far inferior performances to the other competitors.

AND... it's Australia Day today. Big holiday Monday tomorrow, and more cricket, even though my local team got beaten tonight, in the T20 form of the game, which won't mean anything to you if you're an American, sorry.

I've never met an American who has any time for cricket! :)

Phar Lap is a legend in Australia.
The movie made in 1983 is hands down the best Horse Racing film ever made. The film stays true to the story too. That’s how incredible Phar Lap’s life was and how tragic his death was.
I have the movie on VHS but cannot find it on any streaming services so I cannot watch it on my huge TV. Bummer.

Cricket is the pinnacle of competitive sports. Where else is a game so demanding both physically and mentally that they wear straw sun hats and perform live interviews while actually playing in the field?
