Unlimited Hydro Simulator

  • For years I have been looking for an Unlimited Hydroplane simulator to no avail. And just by the off chance I decided to look around last weekend and found one! Not only is it tons of fun and the graphics are decent but it's free. For any of you who like Unlimiteds and grew up watching them like me this is a blast. And for the icing on the cake there are tons of custom schemes you can add to the existing model. For instance, I added the "U-12 Miss Seahawk" and Sonics and other great schemes.

Like a damn kid in a candy store I tell ya!

The sim can be found here: http://www.uhlhydroplanes.com/hydrosim

  • I was looking at some of my yachting p o r n the other day on youtube, when I came across a boat called the "Black Legend". Its a 150' Mangusta built by Overmarine of Italy. It has a look that could be very easily translate into a Seahawks theme. All you need to do is send me your exta 33 million dollars for the boat and I'll handle the rest. The side window is shaped just like the eye on the logo of the bird. Its needs a beak hook on the bow and bam baby!
You got a floating Seahawks head zooming thur the waves. Its preety sweet.

    Cheers

Oh I have flipped 5 or 6 times already, lol...I am finding the physics to be quite realistic. Even the replay it looks very realistic in the way it moves in the air. No "Miss Rock" lake bottom dwelling yet. ;)

That era had so many boats that could win and many sponsors, the qualifying and racing could go on all weekend and drew huge crowds and then the semi finals took a whole weekend also with the last race always late late afternoon.

It was affordable for local area business as well as Regional to have boats, not just the major guys. And all had a fairly even set up, boat design changed a bit but with everyone running aircraft engines Rolls Royce were the preferred .

I miss the days when hydros were a major annual event that meant something to the region.

I about fell off my chair when I found out KIRO 7 was no longer going to cover Seafair Sundays. Thank GOD KING 5 picked it up. With the hydros and Blue Angels, it's my most coveted Must See TV every year.

The best part is you could have 200,000 plus people all around the lake and on it and there rarely was a incident of note, yeah sometimes people would overload a small boat and need fishing out but generally the people policed themselves and the worst aspect was the sunburn you dealt with.

At home it was like a Super Bowl for the area, people would gather and have Bar B ques and family get togethers around it, everyone had their favorites, Mis Pride of Pay N Pack, Miss Thriftway, Miss Oboy Oberto, Miss US, Miss Madison, Miss Bardahls, Miss Budweiser, yeah that was Darth Vader of the Hydros, Big Money Sponser evil to the core :) Bernie Little was like Bill Belichek of Hydros. Miss Atlas Van Lines who's team bought the Pay n Pack since they could not beat her. and Dozens and Dozens more. Miss Rock was one of the best looking boats to hit the Water, it just never seemed to run, EVER.

Yep, you were either pro-Bud or Anti-Bud. I was always anti-Bud. Was a big Atlas Vanlines (the blue blaster), Miller American or Circus Circus fan, whatever the Bud rival was. I disliked Bernie Little with a passion as we was the George Steinbrenner of the hydros back then, buying trophies. I would have preferred competitive balance. I didn’t appreciate Bernie Little’s accomplishments of trying and successfully keeping a dying sport alive until years after he passed away.

I remember going down to the lake as a kid buying and trading hydro buttons during qualifying.
Still have some lying around my moms house somewhere.

I looked forward to the Seafair unlimited hydro races coming to town every year, it was like the circus (on the water) coming to town.

My week was made or shattered as a kid depending on who won the Finals race. My little brothers were pro-Bud guys so someone was going to be pissed and the other had bragging rights.

  • Yeah I didn't mind Bud and Bernie because I knew the strength in their sponsorship but they were a fun team to hate like the Cowboys or Yankees...And Chris you are so right, why couldn't Miss Rock stay afloat?!? LOL!!

I miss the days of the battles of the old boats; Pay N' Pak, Atlas Van Lines, Circus Circus, Squire Shop, Budweiser, etc...

Man, those were the days. When the hydro races mattered to all of us locals! When we used to carve out wooden hydros and tow them behind our bikes in the street in the 70's/80's. I will forever cherish my memories of watching the hydro races either in person or on TV (I loved watching it live on TV and hearing them simulataneously from my back yard)... The good ol' days. And yes, I have learned with age that we really do say things like "The good old days" the older you get, lol.

  • Todd/Aros, thank you for this! Wonderful graphics on your sim 'thunderboat' (which is what unlimited hydros are called here, but there are very few, and none in Adelaide). I've only actually once seen a thunderboat do a demonstration here, during a circuit racing meet at my local Adelaide Speedboat Club (ASBC)... they run smaller inboard boats of various classes up to something like your K-boats, tunnel-hull outboards, etc, if that makes sense, on a tight circuit. Sadly, very few hydros these days, even in these much smaller circuit classes.

This was in the early '80s in Adelaide, on our narrow circuit course, so it was only a couple of runs (no racing turns), not a full circuit. I have an old photo somewhere, which I'm going to try to find. Boat had Rolls-Royce Merlin piston engine; can't remember the name. Sounded like a Spitfire on water...

My only other experience was in 1995, at Lake Leake, in the far southeast of South Australia, where there was a decent sized triangular course on which the thunderboat "Aussie Endeavor" did a full couple of demonstration laps at high speed. Apparently this boat eventually moved to the US, and raced as "Outback Steakhouse." I can't remember if this is even true, though! It had a Lycoming turbojet, as used in Chinook helicopters.

According to the H1 Hydro FAQ, the Lycoming is standard these days in almost all cases (I note the current Allison piston-powered boat). I have downloaded the sim, thanks, Todd!

It's so good to talk fast boats, of any type.
