Nice pics, hope your son is recovering well. Just curious what kind of "rally" is your relative attending? Can't help but notice the masked guy in the background holding an assault rifle. I'm guessing native American? Someone could confuse with ISIS.

  • Why are you putting rally in quotation marks? That was a rally against the Keystone XL pipeline on the Lakota Pine Ridge Reservation.

Because if its just a "rally" why the need for armed, masked gunman?

  • Because there is very long history of violence against activist Indians.
And a long, documented history of harassment by the FBI.
And because that's the job of the akicita on the Lakota reservations, since the late 1960s. (No I'm not from there. A delegation from our Rez went up there.. To the rally.)

One would think people would have already acknowledged this and wouldn't comment on a picture that explains what is going on. I really need to crush that faith in humanity I have at times, it's rather disappointing.

I went to a pow wow at Pine Ridge many years ago. They have not forgotten or forgiven. Nor should they. If I had not been with a Lakota friend I would have been in some trouble, but I would not have gone if not for him asking me to.

South Dakota has some amazing scenery.

Not true. You really need to know a situation before you comment on it. Most rallies, pow wows, etc that either involve certain Indian activist groups, or on some reservations generally have FBI informants and FBI agents or people hired by the FBI present. They take photos of anyone. Guess how that gets spun out in meetings? Frankly, the masks are probably no longer effective because of modern recognition software but it was a lesson bitterly learned so not soon forgotten.
