To: George W. Bush and Dick Cheney From: Tomas Young
I write this letter on the 10th anniversary of the Iraq War on behalf of my fellow Iraq War veterans. I write this letter on behalf of the 4,488 soldiers and Marines who died in Iraq. I write this letter on behalf of the hundreds of thousands of veterans who have been wounded and on behalf of those whose wounds, physical and psychological, have destroyed their lives. I am one of those gravely wounded. I was paralyzed in an insurgent ambush in 2004 in Sadr City. My life is coming to an end. I am living under hospice care.
I write this letter on behalf of husbands and wives who have lost spouses, on behalf of children who have lost a parent, on behalf of the fathers and mothers who have lost sons and daughters and on behalf of those who care for the many thousands of my fellow veterans who have brain injuries. I write this letter on behalf of those veterans whose trauma and self-revulsion for what they have witnessed, endured and done in Iraq have led to suicide and on behalf of the active-duty soldiers and Marines who commit, on average, a suicide a day. I write this letter on behalf of the some 1 million Iraqi dead and on behalf of the countless Iraqi wounded. I write this letter on behalf of us all—the human detritus your war has left behind, those who will spend their lives in unending pain and grief.
I write this letter, my last letter, to you, Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney. I write not because I think you grasp the terrible human and moral consequences of your lies, manipulation and thirst for wealth and power. I write this letter because, before my own death, I want to make it clear that I, and hundreds of thousands of my fellow veterans, along with millions of my fellow citizens, along with hundreds of millions more in Iraq and the Middle East, know fully who you are and what you have done. You may evade justice but in our eyes you are each guilty of egregious war crimes, of plunder and, finally, of murder, including the murder of thousands of young Americans—my fellow veterans—whose future you stole.
Your positions of authority, your millions of dollars of personal wealth, your public relations consultants, your privilege and your power cannot mask the hollowness of your character. You sent us to fight and die in Iraq after you, Mr. Cheney, dodged the draft in Vietnam, and you, Mr. Bush, went AWOL from your National Guard unit. Your cowardice and selfishness were established decades ago. You were not willing to risk yourselves for our nation but you sent hundreds of thousands of young men and women to be sacrificed in a senseless war with no more thought than it takes to put out the garbage...
I think we should all be grateful of what these guys are willing to lay on the line for our country, and what some have given, but I think if you are not outraged by what was wasted by invading Iraq and what was "sold" to the American people to get them to buy in, then you are not paying attention. The letter goes on to talk about how this guy would have felt like it meant something had his injuries and eventual death came in Afghanistan, but he get it a wasted that it came in Iraq, based on lies, motivated by greed and ambition, and I can't blame him.

Could have been a letter written during Vietnam. Next time we Americans see saber rattling by chicken hawk politicians that have hollow reasons for war, I hope we get a little louder in saying, "NO!"

This! Leaving all political stuff out of it for one post, before Iraq I thought we as a country learned our lessons from Vietnam, I was wrong!

Popular support for the war hit an all time low during the Bush administration. Through polls, surveys, and the occasional mass protest, the sweeping majority of Americans were against the war in Iraq, but our government simply chose to ignore our will on the matter. Given that we've pretty much exhausted our means to peacefully object to the actions of our government, what option(s) do we have?
How do we say "no" any louder without it resulting in bloodshed?

History has brushed over the anti-war GI Movement during Vietnam. There's a magnificent documentary on it called "Sir! No, Sir!" There were 500,000 reported incidents of desertion during that war. The soldiers basically mutinied against the military, forced the government to make it an air war, before forcing it to ultimately pull out. The lesson to be learned is that it takes willing people to fight a war. We do have the power to walk away and not fight for needless causes.

I'm re-reading a good book series I read years ago called The Brotherhood of War by W.E.B. Griffin. He did good research and as I remember it, the military officials knew Vietnam was not gonna be winnable and they told the politicians so but it fell on deaf ears. Let the men trained to do the job, do the job they are trained to do and when they tell you what is possible and what is not, maybe politicians should pay attention!

The military industrial complex is the root of many evils, namely the continuation of our presence in the Middle East.

Eisenhower had a great speech warning about the military industrial complex when he was president.

Ok, I've been trying to stay out of this forum but this issue hits close to home. While many of us veterans did not like the war, we still signed up, and continued to re-enlist, while it was going on. I joined in November of 1991 and retired after 20 years 1 month and 17 days of active military service in the USAF. I was deployed in direct support of Operation Northern Watch and Southern Watch during Saddam's reign. We know what we were getting into, it's not a large leap in logic to know that if you are in the military, ANY branch of the military you have to potentially pay the ultimate sacrifice.
For anyone to write something like this after they have served saddens me. There are options if you don't agree with the war, hell, just don't fucking join if you don't agree with the possibility of being part of a shitty war. Do I think we still need to be there? No. Will I write stupid fucking letters that will never be read by the people they are addressed to? Fuck no.
It is easy to sit back and say that the war is unjust if you have never been a part of it. It is easy to sit back and rail against the system that sends young men and women to their deaths. But how many of those young men and women would change their mind if given a second chance? It's not like the military is rounding people up to herd them to enlist. It's still a voluntary military last time I checked. Even though the war was started under false pretenses, a fucking dictator who was killing his own people is no more. We tried to help out our fellow man, and that should count for something. Like it or not people, we are the world police, and that isn't going to change anytime soon.
If nothing else just remember those who have fallen, and hope that they have found peace in whatever there is after this life.

Except that Congress voted in favor of the war. The letter should be addressed to all who voted for it, not just Bush-Cheney.

yup yup, i usually wouldn't say the president is 100% at fault but in this case the village idiot from texas should get a good chunk of the blame. Presidents can veto the bill but the main reason i put this on him is for his north korea propaganda style fear tactics.

Blame the President for his share, no doubt, but you can't leave congress out because you have 20/20 hindsight, or because you didn't believe it then. The facts are that Congress gets intelligence information that we never see. Congress also voted for this war and everyone who voted yes should be held to the same standard, democrats and republicans alike. Don't stop blaming Bush, but don't limit yourself to the one man either. It would be like saying that Obama is 100% to blame for the Sequester (no I'm not comparing the sequester to the war, just how the government functions). Sure he has to take major responsibility for it because it was HIS idea and he pushed for it, but Congress passed it and Congress has the power to change it, again Democrats and Republicans.
Sense a theme yet?

That's not quite the same thing as Martyrdom though

I'm pretty sure everytime a soldier is killed he "died for his country."
Pretty sure that's martyrdom. I realize martyrdom is mostly used in relation to dying for a religion but it's certainly applicable.

We may just have to agree to disagree, but IMO the way it was being discussed within this context (not every context mind you) is that dying for the cause being the way you get to "heaven". Our soldiers for the most part (I'm sure there are exceptions) don't go into the war hoping to die for the cause. Their getting to heaven when killed in combat is not thought to come BECAUSE they died for the cause, but for how they lived their lives. A very different philosophy.
