Well, they built the stadium in a way that most FANS are shielded from the rain. Maybe PA had in mind that rain isn’t something that justifies having a roof for football. And may have even thought we could use it as some sort of advantage as we’d be more used to it than other teams are. Didn’t really pan out that way though.

I remember reading that is how Mr. Allen wanted it.

Also a retractable roof is expensive and requires significant maintenance.Football was meant to be played in the elements.

In this day and age there is no reason why they shouldn't have a retractable
roof especially in Seattle! This why we had a dome to begin with.
Rain does us no favors and all it does is slow down any speed advantage
and cause our RB to slip and lose footballs..I can see by looking at the
stadium from above that it is possible to construct such a roof and and I
hope it happens in near future.

Borderline .500 team when it was built, we needed every advantage we can get....

We got lucky in getting Wilson! If only we had a dome w/ him now...Eventually in 20years when Wilson retires, we will be happy to have the rain help us again.

A couple reasons I can think of, baseball gets rained out and the cost difference. And I think they were originally going to have a natural turf field for the soccer purists.

I actually prefer seeing the different elements even if they gain no advantage and my seats are high and dry.

Football weather, that's all part of it. I want football to be outside the way it was intended.
You're not gonna' melt in the rain. No excuses for weather, we don't need to be like the Cougs who actually claimed they lost yet another Apple Cup because of snow...…….in Pullman
Of course, my wife would totally disagree and that's no surprise, she hates sitting in the rain :irishdrinkers:
Shoot, I'll be soaked in the rain at Husky Stadium tomorrow, and again at the House of Noise on Sunday. But I'll survive and I choose it living in Seattle. To each his/her own I guess.

The current stadium was designed to funnel noise. Football is played in the elements. Fans(whimps) who don’t like the weather can stay home.

I loved playing in snow and rain. I just was wondering the thought process but guess we didnt think we would have a HOF QB.

Football and soccer are meant to be played in the rain. If you have ever tried playing baseball in the pouring rain you will have your answer. The infield gets ruined pretty quick. I also would personally would be a touch nervous stepping up to the plate with a guy throwing 95 on the mound with a wet ball.

This is the reason or at least part of it. Sanctioned FIFA events must be played on grass and a major selling point for the public portion of the financing was possible world cup games. Ownership group initially agreed to a grass field. Midway through construction they negotiated the switch to field turf with the promise of bearing the cost to switch over if FIFA games were scheduled. After see how much dirt they move in and out for those monster truck and super cross events, it seems like it would be a small job to put in some sod.

Just check Wikipedia
Allen rejected plans for a retractable roof during the early stages of the stadium's design. The lack of a retractable roof made it open to the elements, provided better views, and reduced the total cost of the project.[27] The roof, at 200,000 sq ft (19,000 m2),[32] covers 70% of the seats but leaves the field open.[23

The 1997 state referendum stated that the stadium would feature a natural grass surface, but FieldTurf was not an option when the stadium was originally presented to voters according to the Public Stadium Authority.[37] Seahawks management reconsidered surface after the Seahawks played on FieldTurf at Husky Stadium during the 2000 and 2001 seasons. Artificial turf was installed because it was easier to maintain than natural grass. The potential damage to a natural grass field caused by Seattle's frequent rain also made the surface an appealing option.[27] In order to keep a grass surface robust under heavy football use during late fall and early winter rains, a $1.8 million irrigation and heating system would have been required.[38] The coach of the Seahawks at the time, Mike Holmgren, said FieldTurf installation was the right decision and stated that "the players love it, and I think this surface will offer a better product on the field for the fans."[39] Local soccer fans were concerned that the lack of a natural grass field would hinder Seattle's chances of receiving an MLS expansion franchise.[38] They asserted that voters had approved the facility with the understanding that the new stadium was intended for soccer as well as football.[39] In a compromise, First & Goal agreed to pay for grass to be installed for special events when needed.[40]

When the Seahawk's score they throw bombs into the endzone. When Mariners score they run HOME.
