We tend to focus on current needs when looking at the draft, but JS has shown a foresightedness to look ahead at future needs. This makes sense given that it take rookies a few years to develop. This year, I think the needs along the DL and OL are too pressing and need to be addressed. But IF the team were to draft with an eye toward two or three years from now, what positions should they target?

In order:

OT: Losing Ifedi this year. Brown is quite old now. If an OT drops in any of 2020/21/22, you run to the podium and don't trade back.

WR: Lockett is going to be at end of contract and 29/30 years of age in 2021. Third deals for WRs is exceedingly risky. This year is absolutely insane with WR talent. And getting a slot WR in R2 would give us the short term ability to move Lockett between slot and outside. His 2018 production on the outside was near record breaking.

RB: I might opt for 2021 here. Good backs in that draft. Carson should not be resigned. Age/type of use and running style all suggest that injuries and attrition are around the corner with him. Carson UFA in 2021. Penny in 2022. Keep this position group young.

TE: Dissly UFA in 2022. Willson/Hollister in 2020. Depth, age and availability questions abound. Lower need but it's there.

DB: Expect an outside CB project this year in day 3 as Griffin/Flowers insurance in 2021 season. Safety group looks better in 2021.

DT/DE: All the time. Kind of like OL, a team is kind of obligated to take one of each every year given the number of players needed for a roster (~9).

I’d move RB to the top of the needs list. Our top 2 RB’s are coming off significant injuries.

I think OL will be a priority, but I don't know if it's as much looking ahead two to three years so much as looking toward next year. Ifedi is probably gone (and even if he isn't, isn't that good). But I do think there is a general lack of depth at that position with Brown getting old. So I would say that is a mix of need now/need for later.

I would still hope they don't invest anything more than, say, a 5th, maybe a 4th round pick.

Agree with Oline and Dline every year. Thats where the game is decided more often than not. Unfortunately the need for a RB hit pretty fast. We still dont know when they will be at full strength. Carson is supposed to be back by training camp and Penny will be 9 or 10 months. Thats about the start of the season if he works his ass off to get back to where he was. I am not opposed to a high pick there as much as we depend on the running game.

Like Attyla said its a strong class for WR and there will be a need. I would like to see them draft more game speed on D.

Every season we need Offensive tackles, defensive pass rush specialists, corners & tight ends.

Or maybe a mid-tier FA.

corner of 30th & plum
Our defense is a serious problem at this point and you want to draft players that need development ? Thats for the later rounds. Beside did B.Wagner or Russell Wilson need development, hell no.

One aspect of drafting a player that I always go by is FIRST SIZE. For example a WRs are rare over 6' 3" will lose their dexterity and become to gangly, the degradation of cordination. Most all great WRers are between 6' 1" and 6'3" tall ruffly.

WIEGHT 205 to 215 durability reasons which doesn't inhibit there speed. 6'3" 210 perfect size.

This makes more scent then drafting players that just sit on the bench.

If that's the case, what positions of need was Pete looking at 3 years ago?, that should give us SOME idea of who he might be targeting in THIS Draft, no?

What round did Travis Henry go in, because if Pete wants to re-establish his "Run First Identity" he's going to need to pony up in the earlier rounds, just like he did with Penny, as finding another Chris Carson in the later rounds isn't something you can hang your hat on, well, not with a whole lot of confidence anyways.
Just my 2 cents.

OL and DL

TE only if measurements are 6-4 up 250 lbs plus and can run 4.5 40 and run routes and mean streak blocker

WR and LB next

Defenses cannot stop an elite TE

Corner or safety are probably the two deepest positions in the early rounds of the draft. I could see them stashing a guy given Flowers recent struggles and Bradley and Shaq going into contract years.

Tired of “reaches” and project type picks. Need to strike now with immediate impact players.
