Depth Chart, Roster Moves, Cap Position since the Super Bowl

The team usually makes close to 300 roster moves/season ( last year 261 ); the depth chart changes as injuries happen and/or players are added or subtracted as needed. I believe having a depth chart here is a good addition to the main board page so when the team changes players, knowing their player numbers, their names, and positional information is a good thing to be able to quickly refer to here without leaving the site. JS likes to churn the roster a bit to help the competitive situations at various positions.

Here below is a current depth chart. I will record each transaction in and out as they happen. This depth chart is just my opinion, feel free to comment or suggest changes. Comments here are welcomed, this thread is supposed to be informative but ialso to encourage roster discussion. The plan is to record all forthcoming roster moves and to adjust the DC as the roster changes are made.

Please advise here of any changes as they happen. The usual dependable members always assist but everyone should feel completely free to report changes to the roster here when they happen, be careful as sometimes the media gets the story wrong though or the source proves unreliable. All assistance is greatly appreciated and allows us to have an accurate and up to date DC here. I will attempt to keep this depth chart current quickly after all changes, PS designations, waivers, cuts, additions, players claimed, PUP or injury designations, etc.. I will also attempt to keep it current throughout the season by indicating what the roster moves were after they happen. This sometimes involves a delay, sometimes life intervenes, and the delay may result in the update being slower to happen. However, I will make every effort to keep this page current. This hopefully will be a complete record.

I will also update the presently available cap number on a weekly basis, or as quickly as information can be obtained from https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/seattle-seahawks/. Their number can be seen at the bottom of the page.

Here is the roster from Seahawks.com: http://www.seahawks.com/team/roster

Here also a DC from the team: http://www.seahawks.com/team/depth-chart It's not usually posted until after training camp.

Here as well is the transactions report from the team: https://www.seahawks.com/team/transactions/

Looking at the roster with all the FA removed there are three areas of the team that look to be areas of significant need. Those are OT, DLine, and CB. The DLine depth is almost critically weak. To me the depth at other positions could be improved those are notably: C, G, WR, & TE.

I could see the team moving on from Britt as a cap move, and letting KJ wright go as well. There are a few others as well. I do think the team will try to keep some of the DE depth but the interior OLIne is critically depleted.

This will be an interesting offseason personnel wise as the team has some cap flexibility again and could be players in FA. There is no reason other than the terms of the deal negotiated for Clowney not to be kept.

Thanks for that, I missed doing that but had to deal with some family stuff, and was catching it for being on the computer too long. Looks like another attentive mod pinned it for me.

Quick look at the roster shows some pretty obvious areas where depth needs to be either retained or acquired. Looks like priorities will be DLine and OLine. To me it also seems clear there will need to be some others areas of needed acquisition like WR and CB.

I'm showing 5 restricted free agents. Joey Hunt and Branden Jackson plus Kalan Reed (who I think his career is over).

Also -- I think Bryan Mone is an EFA not that it matters much he'll be back either way.

The one guy I don't know what's going on with is Nick Bellore. If you'll recall he was cut and then re-signed at the end of camp. OTC is still showing him under his 2 year contract. I asked Jason but didn't hear back. Jaron Brown was the same deal and he's a UFA so I kind of think Bellore is the same deal but just something to look out for as we get closer to free agency.

Nick at OTC right now is predicting 3 compensatory picks instead of 4. Official list should be out in a few weeks.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

As for salary cap stuff....

I took the OTC salary cap figures and made a few adjustments:

-- First, i added the "proven performance esclator" to the 4th year of the rookie contracts for Chris Carson, Tedrick Thompson and Shaquill Griffin.

-- I added RFA tenders to Hunt, Hollilster and Moore. I also assumed EFA tenders for all the guys on the list at their current minimum salary.

-- I assumed Ed Dickson will be cut at some point. There are a couple of other possible "cap casualties" but i think we can all agree Dickson will not be back at his same salary if at all.

After all of that, the available cap i see is about $49M. Right now that's just a hypothetical figure as lots can change and the league-wide cap hasn't been made official yet. We'll also have to account for draft picks at some point. But when I think about what they have to spend, my mindset is at around $40M, not the $60M++ others are talking about. That's still a lot of opportunity to beef up the roster.

'Storian, I used the below site for our FAs:

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents ... -seahawks/

It's possible Hunt is a RFA though as he was a ERFA last season. The others are UFAs except for Bellore who has another year on his deal to go, the team renewed the contract they had with him after he was cut and then returned.

I just don't know that the team will return all of the ERFAs but is they do the team has 56 players under contract prior to FA and the draft.

They always seem to be able to get quantity of players but presently with the obvious DLine and OLine issues quality will come with some expense.I think you are more right than OTC is about the real available cap number but we need to have a consistent source and OTC is usually pretty dependable.

With the available money to spend and the potential cap cuts and limited areas needing improvement the roster will potentially be beefed up.

I find OTC more reliable than Spotrac. I use a combination of OTC and Rostermon to gather data.

For example: Joey Hunt

http://rostermon.com/player/6197/

He only has 3 accrued seasons, even though he's been on the roster 4 years. In 2017 he was on the PS until Dec 5 -- but because he was on the active roster less than 6 weeks he didn't accrue that season, thus he is an RFA not UFA.

Branden Jackson didn't accrue his first year with Oakland for the same reason. He is an RFA.

OK, I'll adjust those those. OTC says Hunt is UFA and so is Jackson, but you are wise with this stuff and will defer to your expertise.

Presently I'm having secure connectivity problems with OTC.com, very intermittent.

I've been using their info all year long and noted the FA status of each player as per their info, so that must have changed recently. Not to worry, we are trying to get this info right.

In terms of Mone I can't see him as a ERFA he was a UDFA starting this last season.

Will adjust on the others.

If you look at the roster with the FAs pulled from it there are still a few guys who may not be on the team next season for performance and cap reasons.

My suspicion is the following are going to be looked at hard for cost benefit reasons or may be cap casualties.:

OC - Britt, recovering from serious injury, pretty expensive and aging with quality replacements available in the draft.
OC/OG- Pocic, is just not a people mover. However, he could be renegotiated and extended freeing cap.
TE- Dickson, he's done, his knees are shot.

DE/DT- Jones, don't know he wants to be here and can't seem to compete
OLB- Wright, just love this player but his knees are limiting his speed so he's edge vulnerable to speed backs and TEs
FS- Thompson, he's a backup level player with lots of competition from better younger players on the roster.
SS- Hill, can't stay healthy, is a weak tackler and is just slow as heck

PK- Myers, pretty inconsistent for the $ he's making though dead cap may keep him around

I doubt the following UFAs are kept:

WR- Brown, got beaten out by younger less costly players
RB- Turbin, thanks for being a late roster stopgap fill in
OG- Iupati, he's never healthy anymore
OT- Ifedi is a penalty and drive killer who won't get the offer he thinkshe should get from the team
DT- Reed, because he will want more than the team will offer
DE- Ansah, always hurt, unreliable for the $
DE- Watson, was a roster fill-in
CB- Thorpe, two seasons in a row he's been hurt and missed significant time, is a ST star but can no longer be depended upon.
RB- Prosise, 4 years of significant unavailabilty to one injury or another, when he was needed he let the team down, no reward for signing him back.

or the following:
RFA- CB- Kalan Reed
ERFA- LB- Ellerbee

As Hawkstorian has mentioned above, the true available cap after the RFAs and ERFAs are re-signed and all performance based raises are paid will likely be less than $45 Million. That's still enough to build some depth that can stay healthy and improve both the OLine and the DLine.

At the end the team ended the season pretty nicked up and there will be some positions where fresh faces will be needed to prevent repeating the same. There will also need to be a revisiting of several defensive schemes as the team seemed vulnerable on the edges. Further this last year's team tackled poorly and gave up far to many yards after initial contact. There are coaching issues therein, but there are personnel issues implicit in this observation.

Since we're talking about salary cap stuff -- I think it's good to look at the 2021 free agents who might be in line for new deals this off-season. It really comes down to two key guys -- Chris Carson and Shaquill Griffin. Under normal circumstances that would be candidates for extensions. I'm just not sure how eager players will be to sign new deals while the CBA is under negotiation. Interesting times.

I suspect there is too much money on the table for all to be wanting to fight at length about the implementation of a new CBA.

Don't think creating the new deal will be as fractious as last time. That's JMO and it is certainly a worthwhile situation to be concerned about though.

Now I may be skewed because the Hawks obviously hit gold in 2011-2012 with their drafting, it's unrealistic to find that much amazing talent in the rounds they did. But I feel like the past 5 years or so, outside of maybe 1-2 Marquee players, a lot of the Hawks drafting has ended up with so-so players, players who can't stay healthy, players who take themselves out of the NFL before they even play, and possibly players who have other off-field issues. I don't know what the issue is, is it just because the team competes year after year and now drafts at the bottom? is it truly just garbage luck because who can predict the injuries and off-field stuff? Either way from my casual fan standpoint it seems like the poor drafting has been the thing really preventing the Hawks from getting over the hump.

Zag, that's certainly a view that others here have as well. I don't completely agree however as the team has drafted some pretty capable players in the last few drafts, but there have been a few significant fails as well. If it were easy to always draft good players there would be no busts. Very often what a player accomplished in college simply doesn't translate as a pro for any number of reasons.

Frequently as well this is a situation where how good the players are that were drafted is a matter of personal opinion. I'm rather sure there is divergence of opinion about CB- Shaquill Griffin for example, Many here think he's of dubious quality as a CB yet the league has asked him to be an alternate to Sherman in the Pro Bowl which speaks to the opinions of those with superior football knowledge. He is a better player than many here admit.

To me proof of the drafting record can be aligned with how well the team is doing in terms of record and there the team has had a very enviable record for the term of this present regime. Do not the let the negativity of a small group of anti- regime folks colour your thinking on this and make your own decisions based upon objective indicia that more carefully scores the results. Another indicia is how many of the players drafted are still playing either in Seattle or elsewhere. You will find the % is high.

We should accept as well the team has recently faced a significant draft fail in McDowell which skews the results and they have had to overcome a cap crisis faced as a result of earlier successful drafting. The team is constantly rebuilding itself and to me they are doing it better than most of the league but certainly better than it has ever been done here before.

Need to know what Thompson did to qualify, it wasn't playing Safety.

It's a pay system more based upon the number of snaps the player has played rather than actual performance.

The team whiffed on both the Thompson and Hill picks believing the two players would show better playing speed than their combine numbers, Hill just plain sucks instinctively is slow, can’t tackle, takes poor angles, and can't cover, Thompson's knock is while he shows adequate instinctive ability he's too slow to play well in our system, although he had two INTs he’s got poor ball skills. Watching the differences between him and Diggs clearly pointed out Thompson’s weakness. He’s shown he is no better than a depth player, while Hill could be faced with being axed as unable to play at this level.
