Shead joining as defensive assistant. Carl Smith's title not yet known, but it is thought to be a role dealing with game-management related tasks.

Smith was the quarterbacks coach until the Bevell/Cable purge, and Carroll has recently spoken publicly about missing Smith's candor in telling him hard truths. Smith will join an overhauled offensive staff led by Shane Waldron and run-game coordinator Andy Dickerson, both from the LA Rams staff.

It's also worth noting that Russell has a good relationship with Smith. So there is a possibility he wanted him to return as well.

To people that like PC: RW like him, stands up to Carol, history with the team, family natters because son is being added too.

To people that think PC needs to go: another PC yes-man coming back, a Coach that failed and was fired from the team with no real accomplishments, MORE nepotism on the team. This helps to neuter the new OC. Pete Ball or die. Nothing will change.

Me: No idea but the history with Tater and PC is loooooooong.

As long as there is someone around willing to stand up to Pete, help the game run more smoothly and tell him the hard truths, I'm all for it.

Pete has some head-scratching time clock issues, etc. If Carl Smith can help smooth that out, as well as the communication of the plays being called AND Russ has a good history with him, this is a win.

The Seahawks added three coaches to their staff, including two who are very familiar with the organization: longtime Pete Carroll assistant Carl Smith, and former defensive back DeShawn Shead. Also joining the coaching staff is Tracy Smith, Carl's son.
