Looks like a lot of teams are signing their EDGE players before they move elsewhere - this is a highly valued position but between the lower cap and this being a deep FA class it will be interesting how this plays out. So far it looks like players aren't getting the offers on the open market that they wanted - could bode well for getting Dunlap back at a reasonable price. Hope the Seahawks don't lose at the game of musical chairs this time:

Shaq Barrett - re-signed with the Bucs 4/$72M w/$36M Gtd
Bud Dupree - signed by the Titans $16.5M APY
Leonard Floyd - re-signed with the Rams 4/$64M
Trey Hendrickson - signed by the Bengals 4/$60M
Carl Lawson - signed by the Jets 3/$45M w/$30M Gtd
Matt Judon - signed by the Patriots 4/$56M
Romeo Okwara - re-signed with the Lions 3/$39M
Yannick Ngakoue - signed by the Raiders 2/$26M
Dee Ford - restructured with the 49ers 2/$24M
Brandon Graham - signed extension with the Eagles 2/$20M
Haason Redd*ck - singed by the Panthers 1/$8M
Samson Ebukam - signed by the 49ers 2/$12M
Marcus Golden - re-signed with the Cardinals 2/$9M
Takk McKinley - signed by the Browns 1/$4M

Still available:

Melvin Ingram, Chargers
Jadeveon Clowney, Titans
Justin Houston, Colts
Aldon Smith, Cowboys
Carlos Dunlap, Seahawks
Bruce Irvin, Seahawks
Benson Mayowa, Seahawks
Adrian Clayborn, Browns
Ryan Kerrigan, Washington Football Team

Who else is excited for the inevitable head scratching overpaid castaways who are no more than depth but are expected to start?

That Judon deal is such a steal for the Patriots.

Oooooooooh No!!! The team isn’t signing this player or that player at highly inflated prices. The sky is falling, the team hasn’t signed anyone.

The Hawks always slow play FA and look for bargains. It’s frustrating if you want a certain star player, but it prevents really expensive FA deals which tend to never work out for the acquiring team.

This the beginning of a marathon, patience and steady discipline is needed.

Not sure if this is directed at me...

I think Edge might be the most important position (along with LCB) that we need to fill, so I thought it would be interesting to follow how the market for Edge defenders is shaping up, especially since it was the first position to have a lot of signings once the window opened. In particular, I'm hoping guys like Dunlap and Clowney might come relatively cheap. I don't think anybody implied that the sky was falling.

Make sure to tell us how the players that we signed last season worked out for us. We spent gross amount of money on mediocre players. There never work out? Quite often free agent signings work out -- in fact we signed quite a few high profile free agents back in the early 2010s with Zach Miller, Cliff Avril, Michael Bennett, and Tony McDaniel.

Last season we had one of the largest cap rooms, but spent most of it on an army of losers.

Yup int eh early years they did pretty good, however since 2015 nope not at all. Kind of like their drafts since 2014 not so good.

That narrative omitted the reality that ....... Covid-19 disrupted a lot of things.

Last year's BJ Finney story was a pointed example >>> [urltargetblank]https://seahawks.net/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=172772[/urltargetblank]

So, at the end of the day, Finney opted for the safe route. He limited his workouts during the offseason, and that led to him reporting to training camp out of shape and above his normal playing weight, something from which he was unable to recover. Whether he may have been able to bounce back had training camp been a normal length or if practice time had not been significantly reduced by the collective bargaining agreement signed in the spring will never be known. But what is known is what went sideways with the signing, and as with many things over the past year, it appears the pandemic may take a large piece of the blame.

That all said, Finney will live forever as the third string lineman John Schneider signed in free agency and then traded to the Cincinnati Bengals for two time Pro Bowl defensive end in Carlos Dunlap like something out of Madden. So, in the end Finney got his payday and the Seahawks got a much needed pass rusher out of it, and all’s well that ends well.

Pats are doing the opposite of what they usually do and signing everyone under the sun. Probably not a bad idea in a year you should get value and you don't have a ton tied up on your QB.

That would be cool and all... EXCEPT THIS HAS BEEN THE FO'S MO FOR A LONG TIME. All of our lineman have always been B or C tier signings, BJ Finney no exception. He was a backup center for the Pittsburgh Steelers. We've been number 31 or 32 in offensive line spending for ages now. Our MO has to been to go after B or C tier offensive lineman. Except, in this case we spent an inordinate amount of money on B and C tier offensive lineman.

I know you like this FO, but they're not always perfect, I think we can all agree that they really dropped the ball last offseason.

The front office doesn't claim perfection. Some players prove to be who they thought they were and some do not. Some give an honest effort to adjust and fit into a team and some don't.

Feel free to whoosh me if I missed the sarcasm here??!, but McDaniel (600k), Avril (3.7m) and Bennett (4.8m) were exactly the sort of bargain signings that people are unhappy with these days. If somebody bumps the thread about Bennett I'm sure you'll see it full of complaints about wasting money on a 2009 UDFA who unimpressed on his previous stint here and was JAG compared to the coveted names. We were excited about getting Avril in comparison for what looked like a steal at the time (and was).

2011 was an unusual year for the FO as they spent on three different mid-high profile FAs in that next tier down. Sidney Rice was the highest profile signing ($7.8m APY) followed by Zach Miller (7.6m APY) and Robert Gallery (5m). With the benefit of hindsight the explanation is they had cleared most of the previous regime's players from the books at that point and had little to do in the way of extensions so they had extra cash to burn.

Actually, people were really excited about all those signings, because the fanbase back then actually liked the Seahawks. Nowadays people just use Seattle as a lightning rod for their own personal anger, generally.

Great find, I clearly remembered the reaction wrong. I forgot he came after Avril and how generally positive the fanbase was back then.

Huge props to USChawk though who suggested "trade all of our draft picks for picks next year because there aren't a lot of rookies that will make this team." Somebody get that chap an advisory position because it took a few years for that to become obvious to everybody else.
