Long-time NFL assistant coach and current New York Jets passing game specialist Greg Knapp is in the hospital in critical condition due to injuries sustained in a bicycle accident this weekend, according to Mike Klis of 9NEWS.

Knapp’s agent, Jeff Sperbeck, confirmed to Klis that Knapp was injured when his bicycle was struck by a car over the weekend in California.

EDIT: Knapp has died at 58 years old. Sources have confirmed that he was in the bike lane and the car swerved into the lane.

Another distracted driver. It's pathetic how many of those I have to dodge on my Harley. For whatever reason, they can't hear it? Even when I only had 24" pipes coming off the heads....

I cannot find a single story to back up the assertion that the driver was distracted, just that they were still investigating the cause.

Your comment reeks of someone twisting a story to fit a narrative. Let's not make assumptions, okay?

While it is an assumption, it is based on what you see when you ride on a daily basis.

A lot of people are distracted and not just by electronics, eating, doing makeup, etc. So many aren't doing anything at all, just on autopilot lost in their own thoughts.

On more than one occasion when I was riding, I had people look right at me and pull out in front of me anyways. Despite what their eyes were seeing, they were so spaced out that their brain didn't acknowledge it.

You learn to look for that subtle change in expression when their brain acknowledges that a motorcycle is there. When you are driving a car you see it with almost everybody, when on a motorcycle if you see it from half the drivers it is a good day.

That's really sad. Been reading about him today and he seemed to be a solid, solid human being. Prayers to his family and loved ones.

I cycle- road bike, and have for many many years, and every time I go out, I say a prayer that today isn't the day that some distracted driver doesn't see me and either injures me or worse.

Just very sad.

Rest in peace, coach Knapp.

So sad to hear this as he appeared to be a quality guy. I still remember when he was a coach on the Niners and TO blew up on the sidelines at Knapp with Knapp keeping his composure. I don't think I could have stayed as poised as him with TO'S childish outrage.

RIP Coach

That sucks. I see it all the time in NYC. Idiots driving and doing all sorts of secondary things. I have seen over a dozen vehicles hit parked cars. I’ve left so many notes on vehicles. Bikers get hit constantly in the city.

There will never be a story about a distracted driver killing a cyclist because it would get the author hit with a libel suit.

I've seen people at intersections, the sides of their cars all scraped up, and they are texting.

If I didn't drive defensively, is be in the hospital. I'll come up on somebody in the other lane, their speed constantly changing, the arm hanging out the window, gesticulating as their on the phone, and have to be extremely careful when passing them on a multi-Lane highway.

My coworker had a distracted driver pull out in front of him. Totaled his bike, and now he has rods and screws in his legs.

Distracted drivers are a constant problem everywhere, all the time. In the winter, they drive in the left lane, and hook their tire in the snow berm. I have never seen so many cars plowed in to the median. Sometimes there are 3 or 4 in a single day in a 12 mile stretch. The tow business is racking up the $$$, buying new trucks, and advertising for tow truck drivers. "Will train and pay for your CDL."

So it's a constant, and growing problem. In spite of all the commercials, "Stop Wrecks, Stop Texts," the injuring and killing of innocent people continues. The ones commercial where a van driver texted his wife "I Love You" as he plowed through 3 children. He said they bounced over the top of his van.

The car could be considered a weapon, yet these drivers are back on the road the next day. Distracted drivers are no different than drunk drivers, and they should receive the same penalties. It wouldn't surprise me to find that the person that killed Greg Knapp was a repeat offender, and that his death could have been prevented with stricter laws for driving distracted.

Everything you say is true, but the laws are not enforced as much as a speeding ticket, I see everyday dozens of people texting, driving and dialing etc.

The reason is I think those in charge of enforcing be it the State Governor down to the Traffic cop all do it also, how often do you ever see a big name in the news from anywhere get arrested for Texting or a major accident for driving and texting or on a Cell. Yet we see people arrested for having guns in a vehicle for a minor traffic stop, drinking and driving, all the time.

It would appear that your posting was also worse than previously thought. Life is full of surprises.

RIP Greg Knapp.

I have a problem with the title to this thread. If he was cycling safely he would not have been injured. He was injured so theys no way he was doing so in a safe manner. I think this calls for a investigation into if he was or wasn't biking safely. If he was biking safely you'd think he would of seen the car comming and steered away from it leaving him safe. You see what I mean.

Reports say he was in the bike lane and a car swerved into it and hit him. Couldn't really care less about you having an issue with it, honestly. Doesn't seem especially relevant.
