Our defense allows the opposing offense to go on time-consuming drives. Russ and the offense cannot get into any sort of rhythm as they are spending so much time on the sidelines. When its finally their turn, they go 3 and out. Defense is gassed as they cannot catch any rest -- thus allowing the opposing offense to go on another long, time-consuming drive. Our ice-cold offense comes out and immediately sucks it up again. Rinse, repeat.

There's another chicken or the egg. It has been said that rushing yards are low because the offense has so few snaps. But isn't the low volume of snaps kind of a function of the lack of a running game?

Yep, that is indeed another one. These issues are all intertwined.

This team is so broken. [emoji20]

Is the defense gassed when they start out the game allowing a long time consuming drive?

Is the offense out of rhythm out of the gate so they start 3 and out? Why do they only kick it into gear in the final 2 minutes of the game?

If our offense would answer their time consuming drive with one of our own, the defense would get some rest and time to discuss/plan for their next drive. When they go 9 minutes and we go 3 and out time after time is the problem.

Let me add another wrinkle. The love of the long ball doesn't help much. Even if we score in 3-4 quick plays, the points don't give our D any rest either. We need more first downs on offense. When you have more punts than first downs, something ain't working.

In my view the TOP thing is very overblown. What's bad about our offense going three and out all the time is that they aren't scoring enough points.

Our defense is allowing the 5th fewest points in the NFL. If our offense was scoring even an average amount then we'd still be square in the running for the division, let alone the playoffs.

Don't buy either premise. Aside from the 1st half of last season, the offense has been slow out of the gate for most of Pete's time here. The defense has also had a habit of starting out giving up long drives. Even in the LOB years, they would frequently give up some long scoring drives to start and then start clamping down.

It's Pete's philosophy that causes both issues. He plays it too safe, does not want to be too aggressive and take too many risks. It's glaringly obvious on the offensive side of the ball, they just look like there is zero sense of urgency when they start the game. You could maybe argue WFT was playing softer in that final drive, but you could just look at Wilson's play and see he had a different mentality. He actually did a QB keeper up the gut with no hesitation and dove head first. That TD to Swain does not happen any other time, just the way he ran up the pocket, probably about to take off. He just looked like he had a fire lit under his ass.

Pete's "don't make a mistake" philosophy has just been taken too far

When it's 35/25, you may be right. It wouldn't matter that much.

But when it gets to 40/20 it's a problem, and ignoring it is short sighted.

It's weird because AC has looked pretty good some games knifing his way through traffic. I think it all comes down to play calling, because the WFT team just clogged the box and challenged us to beat them in the air, and look at what we had for rushing yards.
