Jones looks to be disruptive, but did not receive good PFF grades for run defense. Hopefully he can still improve here.

Sam Darnold is a back up.
...and backup QBs play more in SF than anywhere else. even backups to backups to backups. Christian McCaffrey spins a great deep ball. It'll probably be fine though.

The main injury guy is gone now, and if you don’t think Sam Darnold could execute the 49ers offense I like your wishful thinking. Plug and play

The Hargrave signing wasn’t to improve the run defense. He likely won’t even be in rotation on rushing downs, Kevin Givens will. As well, I don’t know where the narrative that they wanted to improve their rush defense came from. 49ers had the number one rush defense in 2022. Sure the eagles were able to run for 132 yards, but this was on 42 carries! This was more a function of 49ers having zero offense in that game to keep the defense off the field.

The move was for pass rush production from the interior

This is more of an indictment on Javon Kinlaw whose knee has kiboshed his career and draft expectations. Thankfully Lynch has hit on a lot of late draft choices because his first round record is pretty bad
Yes, the 49ers were awesome against the run last year, really head and shoulders above everyone else in the NFL, unfortunately. And they completely shut down the Seahawks on that score. But still, if there was a weakness, it was in that interior line vs. the run. Your man Kevin Givens didn't score that high against the run, and at 6' 1" and 280 pounds, he's not your prototypical run stuffer. Hargrave played more snaps on the defensive line than everyone on the Eagles except Fletcher Cox, so he's not just a pass rusher. In any case, my point is that it's a lot to pay for a player like that, especially when you already have Armstead and Bosa. Maybe use the resources for the secondary? You don't agree?

This is our biggest FA signing since Sydney Jones. I've heard others talk about Bennett and Avril and although they turned out to be a huge value, they were not considered top tier free agents when we signed them.

The only other top tier FA that I can remember this regime signing was Matt Flynn, who was considered the top FA QB back in 2012.

No I don‘t agree. Pash rush was the 49ers weakness last year on defense other than Bosa. The 49ers had 42 sacks but Bosa had 1/3 of them. 49 ers spent money on secondary last year with Charvarious Ward who played well. Also resigned starting FS Gipson as a free agent. I think it is likely they will resign Mosley as CB2 and Lenoir will be slot

So you think that the best use of the 49ers' limited cap space was to use it on one of their strengths, the D-line? What about the replacement for McGlinchey or Ward? And does this mean you guys will not re-sign Samson Ebukam, someone who had a pretty good pressure rate last year?

Sidney Jones cost basically nothing. I dont think anyone outside of big UW homers thought much of it. Did he even play a full season here? He definitely wasnt considered "top tier".

Looks like an awesome signing.

Maybe we can be the muggers instead of the mug-ees on run defense this year.

Get some LB mojo, and Mr. Glass can contribute a season at safety - and I think some holes have been plugged! Whether this is Bwags or someone else. I like the move up front. We're not gonna get pushed around.

Might be nice to take 14 points a game off what we expect Geno to serve up!

Is this the first big early signing JS has made? I know Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril were signed in March of 2013, but it wasn't for this kind of money. In fact, if I remember correctly, Bennett's contract was for 1 year at around $5Mil.

I guess this answers my question.

According to Warren Sharp, an NFL reporter who specializes in analytics, Jones’ contract would be the biggest the Seahawks have given to an outside free agent since wide receiver Sidney Rice in 2011.

PFF grades Jones poorly on run defense. He's more of a gap penetrator and disrupter type of D-lineman.

But very versatile, can play up and down the line. Which Pete and John love...........but yeah, he needs to be next to a couple war daddies.

Which makes me think we're drafting Carter, and grabbing a couple more large bodies in free agency.

Really like this signing. We needed two DE and an OLB. Now it's a much more manageable DE and OLB. Since we're pretty much guaranteed either Anderson or Carter, that leaves only one hole to fill on the D-Line.

I anticipate us waiting until after the draft to fill the last spot or add depth. Could bring back Harris or QJeff if we don't get what we need in the draft.

Dunno - know he’s a disrupter - but I saw some runs getting stuffed 3-5 yards back of the LOS in his highlight reel (which is the sum total of what I know about him). I don’t care who he grabs 3 yards behind the line - just whoever has the ball!

I’ll take that…. also llike being able to move him around for sure. if adams can get healthy - we’ve got two of ‘em that can line up wherever -

Just ran a PFF simulator mock draft and our defensive front now includes Uchenna Nwosu, Dre'Mont Jones, Mazi Smith, and Will Anderson (Cards drafted Jalen Carter). I could live with that.
