At first, I was on the Lock bandwagon and felt that he should be given the opportunity to start at least another game.
But when we go back and look at the brass tacks, take out that last drive and Lock had a very lackluster performance with only about 125 yards passing, missing a number of open receivers, and making some ill advised throws. He didn't perform well enough to unseat a starter, and there's an old adage that a starter should never lose his job to injury.
So yeah, go ahead and start Lock, but put Geno on a short leash.
This is a good post. Considerate of the full picture of the game and not swept away by subjective rhetoric.
He whipped it out when the chips were down, but I think our elation from a primetime comeback win has us forgetting that this felt like a losing effort for the majority of the game. Lock was averaging a net 3.5-ish yards per dropback until the final drive, if I recall correctly.
If DK doesn't make that circus catch where he pins the ball against himself and it doesn't hit the ground - what sort of conversation are we having right now? The discourse feels like it's being driven by a focus on outcomes that simply won't be reproducible on a consistent basis.
I still have my concerns about aspects of Lock's game. I think he removed much of my doubt as to his mental status and his overall makeup with his performance under pressure, but he's got so many fundamental quarterback behaviors to rework that it simply cannot be ignored.
Lot of good too, though. He can sling it even with sloppy footwork. He can operate in structure. He actually looked way better in structure. Obviously is working on developing rapport with the WRs.
If I limit my analysis to what I see from both quarterbacks when it comes to pocket presence, footwork, fundamental process, arm talent, accuracy, poise, and processing... I still gotta go Geno for now. Even with that Lock W that I nearly lost my voice screaming for.
And that's purely objective because, believe me, I do not want that damn cap hit in 2024. This should probably be Geno's last year here if he won't accept a decent paycut.
I liked a whole lot about what Lock did, but there were some limitations and I just can't call it a performance worth immediately usurping the starting spot on a team in the playoff hunt. It was no Russell Wilson 2012 preseason stuff, regardless of it being promising overall.
