Seahawks draft tracker: The latest updates, picks, and trades

Seahawks’ biggest areas of need

Defensive end

The Seahawks were thin at defensive end heading into the draft, but after dealing Clark to Kansas City they faced an even more immediate need to bolster their pass rush. The selection of TCU’s L.J. Collier with the 29th overall selection in the first round is a start.

Clark alone accounted for nearly a third of the team’s sacks last season (14), and he and defensive tackle Jarran Reed combined accounted for nearly one half. Clark was also a disruptive presence on the line, and one of the speediest in the front seven, with a career-high 27 quarterback hits in 2018. The Seahawks have five defensive ends currently on the roster: Branden Jackson, Rasheem Green, Jacob Martin, Cassius Marsh, Nate Orchard, and Quinton Jefferson, who can also play at defensive tackle

Carroll: Seahawks ‘found something special’ in 1st-round pick L.J. Collier

For Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider, though, Collier brings plenty of intangibles.

That combined with Collier’s Senior Bowl performance, versatility and aggressiveness seems to be what was behind Schneider’s summation of Collier as “just our kind of guy.”

“L.J. fits us,” Schneider said. “He’s a heavy-handed, tough, chip-on-his-shoulder guy. He lost his mother when he was a freshman in college and he didn’t play well in the last game that she saw. And he’s always used that (as motivation).”
