Calling plays from the booth

I noticed in the Panther-49er game that 49ers offense coordinator Greg Roman sits in the booth. Does he call the plays? I read that plays called from the booth must be relayed to the field and then to the QB. I know this was an issue of theirs in the past at the CLink for obvious reasons...
