Our biggest problem isn't our defense, it's our offense being a ******* boiled potato with no seasoning in the first half of every motherfucking game.

So you don't think our D needs some pretty big improvement?

It will not matter he is doing what PC wants.
Please, it does matter. We have never had such a poor defense in the Pete Carrol era. Norton is not a D coordinator. Let him coach the linebackers thats fine with me but get someone else to run the D.

Yeah we have never tried to run the PC defense with this many young guys and injuries. But in the end this is PCs defenae, so changing the DC will not change the defense
You act like Pete doesn't let his coaches coach. He gives general direction and certainly has input but to say the D coordinator has no say, input, or influence on the team is silly.
There is a reason 2 D coordinators from this team where hired by others teams as head coaches. Its because they were good at their jobs. Norton is not good at his job. Hence why no one will be looking to hire him should he be fired from his position.

Ahh got it so PC gets a pass, those 2 DCs players the same system but had the talent to do it. That system is PCs, and we so t gave the talent to play it.

Good LB coach, and clearly has the respect of that room, but dear God the defense has been painful to watch this season.

I wouldn’t be upset if he was fired.

I remember we'd hear the same thing about Bradley, that he was following Pete's philosophy and that there's no way we'd do better. Then along came Quinn and the defense got significantly better and we won the SB. Norton needs to be jettisoned into space

I can’t believe no one is talking about that garbage player aka Delano Hill. When he was in we gave up back to back 3rd and long.

That D gave up 3rd and long all year long, with or without Delano Hill on the field

I'm not enough of an x's and o's guy to intelligently comment on scheme, but with some of the talent gaps we had at times this year on defense, I'm just wondering if its fair to lay all of the blame on Norton.

The defense wasnt good this year. Just wondering how much of that was actually his fault.
This ^^^ here needs to be a permanent header attached by .Net to every post on this site. It would probably cut the needless arguments in half.

They do. However, I personally am bothered more by having major talent and consistently using it poorly. (Our offense; primarily Wilson.)

Can anyone even explain what Delayno Hill was even doing on the field on the last two plays?

Whoever let this guy on the field on crucial down needs to be fired

I guess you also can't criticise music or movies because you don't know how to make them

31st in punts per drive
32nd in third-downs forced
32nd in early-down first downs
26th in red zone defense
28th in pressure rate
29th in yards after catch allowed
29th in tackles for loss in passing situations
29th in missed tackle
26th in run defense by DVOA

Just half of those should warrant a change in staff but good lord they were bad across the board. There is too much talent with that group to be a bottom 5 defense in the league.

The defense regressed and the talent level wasn't that bad. So I have to blame the D coordinator. There's nothing to suggest Norton is a good or even decent DC. So an upgrade would be welcome.

I wouldn't go for Phillips. His D was worse than ours. He's too old. But there has to be a hot position coach that people are high on somewhere we can hire and start interviewing now.

I get why you are irritated, I really do. But if you step back and look at it our offense was pretty solid this year and early in the year when we hadn't lost half our offensive team they were actually top 5 good.
Our D on the other hand has been terrible right from the jump. We were not just a poor D this year we were down right awful. Aside from turnovers this was a BOTTOM OF THE LEAGUE D!!!

Those are some HORRIFIC stats. Norton needs to go. If Pete keeps him on as the DC, I don’t think I can invest the same time and energy into this team next season. It’s so crystal clear to me that he’s way in over his head.

Will never happen. Pete wants lackeys...not innovation.

Ya, he needs to go. Consistently bad. And consistently horrid to start games.

The tackling alone has to put Norton on the hot seat.

But if you want to find the one overriding factor behind the defense's suck, you have to look at player acquisition, specifically the attempts to fix the defensive line. Just not nearly enough done there. Injury has played a part in that, but this DL was never configured for speed, either. Beyond Shaquem, who was used only sparingly, and Clowney, there was zero speed on this roster, and that is almost entirely to blame for all the bad stats you see.

No secondary can hold up well when there's no pass rush. Not even the Legion did.

I agree, didn't do much in Oakland
Didn't do much? DIDN'T DO MUCH?! That's a complete understatement. Those units he fielded in Oakland were borderline historically bad. He had absolutely no business being hired here. None. Another Pete example if Pete being comfortable with his past colleagues and not wanting to do the dirty work of scouting who was available. I don't even know who was available anymore, but I bet there were a handful of guys who would've been a good fit here.
