So "starting the slide" is when the knee finally touches down?

So if a player decks the QB before the knee makes contact it's not a foul?

"Starts his slide" means a body part other than the hands or feet touches. It's a misnomer, and it was a terrible challenge.

It’s never been marked that way in all my years of watching football.

The refs always mark it where he starts to initiate a slide. Always

Checked Rulebook - it is a correct call.

A good coach would turn this into a cheat code.

Train a RB to "slide" for 3-5 yards before allowing the knee to touch down. Can't be hit or it's a personal foul.

I disagree, in fact I've always thought the refs have been extremely lenient with the spots in favor of the QB on slides.

Anyway, directly from the NFL rulebook.

"sliding feet-first on the ground. When a runner slides feet-first, the ball is dead the instant he touches the ground with anything other than his hands or his feet."
