I don't think he is one of our best 5 WR's. No reason to keep him around at any price.

What if he signed for the $2.4M in dead cap money that cutting him cost anyway?
That would make his 2014 cap hit $4.8M, which is a savings... but cutting him and then re-signing him to $2.4M for 2014 will "cost" the club $3.0M more in 2014 cap space than releasing him outright.

Rice's production hasn't justified his contract, but I for one am glad he was healthy most of 2012 and there to be an veteran outlet for Wilson as a rookie. Lets not take a dump on the guy just because we paid him.

Who took a dump on him? All I see is 2 groups of people

One that love the idea of rice, and love him cause he plays for their favorite team.

And the other people that point out the obvious, he's always injured and not worth keeping.

I seem to remember saying exactly both things in my post, but feel free to carry on with your faction building...

Obviously I didn't mean cut him, eat the dead money, and then re-sign. Please see Pandion's post. He understood what I meant. I was talking about a restructure that would be closer to his dead money is going to cost.

IMHO Kearse appeared to outperform Rice.

I am glad he got a ring with us and glad he got paid but I think his productive days are behind him.

Time to move on and draft some young tall dude in this reportedly deep WR draft.

I don't want to waste ANY cap space on Rice.

Cut him, and he's welcome back as a non roster invitee for camp if he can't find a team. But to spend cap money on a player who got chronic injury issues is not a wise decision.

Then say restructure. I've seen dumber things posted by others so it's not out of the realm of possibility. A lot of people do not understand the salary cap and we cannot interpret your words to mean one thing when you say another.

I wasn't talking to you so your reaction makes 0 sense and it's unclear why you even responded.

No you clearly didn't say both of those things bud, you said you'd want him on a cheap contract. And to a lot of people its pretty clear he proved more than enough he will never be healthy and shouldn't be here.

Wasn't faction building, was stating both sides of the argument neither of which said anything bad about Sidney other than the truth, In the context of someone talking about people taking a dump on rice. But Good try, feel free to talk about football next time you want to respond.

yes, he certainly took his millions of dollars so admirably, hard to imagine anyone having that good of an attitude while getting filthy rich. He could have restructured last year or any of the other years he didn't earn his pay check to allow us more cap space for people, do I blame him or mad at him for not doing so? Not in the slightest bit, but I have no clue how he's earning this love affair. I'm sure it's so hard playing on the most fun team in the league lol, have some perspective here folks.

All he's doing is taking away a roster spot from guys who we can count on being healthy or developing, what if Matthews or any other young rookie types could be the next baldwin..does that not make anyone cringe we could be missing out knowing rice is probably only good for 8 games a season. ..
Who can you count on being healthy?
You can't and that is why the hawks are so great. Great depth in key positions are important since injuries can happen to any player at any time. I get the criticism on Rice ' injury littered career, but football! Violent sport.
I get the intrigue with Mathews but some comments like he already earned Rice ' spot is silly. At this point he is roster fodder.
All that being said I love me some Rice, but that ship has sailed with his contract. WR will be drafted and competition will continue for the X.

I'm not going to say wanting rice in general has no argument, but to belittle how horribly injury prone rice is=flat out silly. Rice is the kinda guy who strains his forearm while buttering his toast. Saying football is violent only reiterates the fact that he will never be healthy, it doesn't make it ok. But to answer your original question, lots of people arnt as injury prone as rice, it's not even close enough to warrant actual statistical facts.

Yeah I agree saying Matthews already replaces him is silly, but that wasn't my point for the record. Just saying there's guys like that, which we bring in that could possibly be the future, and possibly add a lot more stability that don't get their chance to develop cause we're handicapping a spot for rices 8 games a season. Stability and player development is much more important than what a guy can offer for parts of a season imo.

You said you only see two groups of people. I proved you wrong. I said it's tragic he's injured a lot, but is worth having around for when he is healthy, provided he comes cheap (more or less).

I suppose I shouldn't get mad at you though. You're just expediting what always happens here; dividing everyone into "lovers" and "haters". Label them whatever you want; "fanboys" and "realists" is also popular. Sugar coat it as much or as little as you like, but that's what you're doing.

What typically happens in these situations is that once the group is sufficiently divided into "lovers" and "haters", we commence having "discussions" that quickly devolve into "arguments" that then further devolve to "name calling". This process continues thusly until A) something actually happens with the topic of discussion, which either proves the "lovers" or "haters" right B) Something more interesting happens causing the thread to become unpopular or C) The discussion devolves so far beyond any relevent discussion causing the thread to become locked (or Sachawk posts pictures of porn).

How am I doing so far..?

yikes man, Not here to argue semantics, i still think you fall under the rice fan club category. I never said that fan club doesn't acknowledge his injury history, rather made the implication that the people that want him gone are done dealing with it.

I see your point though, often times it's very deluding to a conversation..originally In that context I was just trying to point out no one was "hating" on him. But I get how I came off, perhaps I unintentionally labeled it like that cause this topic has been beaten to death and most people's views are pretty clear on this subject. But I suppose that just goes back to what you're saying regardless.

I guess this is where I follow suit and call you a dirty rice lover :th2thumbs:

Rice earned his deal. We paid him a premium because NO ONE wanted to sign with Seattle in 2011. Same with Miller. We needed decent vet players to keep the ship afloat while we rebuilt. His familiarity with Bevell's system paid dividends for our other receivers in a lock-out shortened season. In 2012, he was our best receiver during Seattle's breakout season. He made a team-defining play in Chicago while compromising his consciousness. Never saw him shy away from blocking down-field. All of these things were building blocks toward Seattle's eventual Super Bowl victory. When healthy, he looked like a guy who was worth being our highest paid receiver.

Whether we decide to completely move on from him or not, I'll never regret giving him that contract in 2011.

Scary accurate.

Some people just like to argue and are subsequently prone to pot shottin' posts to find that argument.

In another thread, a person participating in this discussion here, agreed with what I had to say, yet insisted on arguing my point anyway (!?).

I'm sure psychologists have initials (ADD, OCD, ADHD...?) they like to attach to this type of person. I prefer to ignore this type of person. I'd rather discuss than argue, but I don't profess to being the perfect poster, either. I am very committed to my very strong opinions, but I also know that I am capable of being wrong. IE: Earlier I said Suzy Kolber was looking rather hot. In hindsight, that was probably inaccurate. So there ya' go. ; )

I hope we keep him mainly because a player with his size, athleticism, and hands is hard to replace. That said, anything over $3 million in 2014 would be an overpay (I consider $3 million to be the going rate for an average NFL starter at a non-critical position). Rice will probably refuse a paycut and test FA knowing full well there is a ton of money for teams to spend this year.

like when i said you were fairly accurate and i described what i had issue with and you went off on a tangent calling out everything from RWs success to betting me off the boards with some ludicrous challenge about a silly debate i never even said you were wrong about (draft odds)? lol. i think everyone has their moments on here lets not take things too serious on the internet. what else is there to do but debate random topics on a football board?

although i do agree its nice for us all to be reminded from time to time that there is no black and white about many of these discussions.. as much as i dont care to have rice on the team lol.
