Winning championships increases Russell's sales of merchandize without increasing the salary cap, thus freeing salary money to pay better players to win more championships.
By maximizing his endorsement income he could accept the league minimum salary and still lead the NFL players in total income, and he is smart.
Bingo!
Watching NFLN last night a little clip between a segment and a commercial had 3 QBs in succession on the screen. 1st was Russell Wilson, then behind him was Andrew Luck with Aron Rodgers 3rd. That says a lot about the current popularity of the 3 QBs.
Russell Wilson wants to own a team one day, he's not going to get that money from an NFL Payroll, he needs to work his popularity outside of the confines of the cap in order to increase his net worth that much.
He could learn from former player, and current Panthers owner Jerry Richardson too.
