Can someone please explain why when the Denver D was penalized for holding on the final drive, the 5 yard penalty was added to the end of Russell's run?

Section 3

(a) For fouls committed during a running play which is not followed by a change of possession, the Basic Spot is the
dead-ball spot

Section 4
Article 2: Foul Committed During Running Play. For a foul committed during a running play when there is not a
subsequent change of possession during the down, the Basic Spot is the dead-ball spot.

So wouldn't this mean 5 yards from the spot of the foul not end of the run?

"Dead ball" means the point at where the tackle is made, ball carrier goes out of bounds, or where the play ends. So when the ref says "Dead ball, personal foul #99 defense", it means he's going to tack on an additional 15 yards (or half the distance to the goal line if inside the 30) from the end of the play.

So in this case, when the rule says "dead ball spot", it means they return to the point at which the play ended and assess any penalty from that point.
