Something just occurred to me while watching the Combine.

Did you notice how many prospects were wearing gold spikes?

Didn't one Marshawn Lynch want to wear gold spikes in the NFC Championship Game, but was told by the league that deviating from their dress code would result in a 15-yard penalty and possible ejection?

Does this not seem highly inconsistent and hypocritical again, or am I missing something?

The NFL has a contract regarding shoes in games.. the combine wouldnt be covered.

Its just another sign of how money can ruin a game.

So you're saying these prospects should enjoy the chance to wear those shiny kicks while they can, because once they sign a contract, their individual tastes are thrown out the window and they become marketing property of the league?

Once one signs an NFL contract you are no longer free to wear what you want on the playing field. The rules for athletic wear are very restrictive due to signed contracts with sponsors. That's why it is called the NoFunLeague!

How is it any different then anyone one of us getting hired at a company that has a required dress code? The combine is part of their interview process for those athletes to get hired. If you went to a job interview you can wear what you choose to wear but if you get hired you get to follow the company rules from that point on.

Very good point, however the prudent interviewee will wear clothing and accessories that one would expect to wear in that particular job. If that translated to a prospective NFL player, you'd think the footwear would resemble what would be deemed appropriate in an actual game.

But heck, one guy wore a gold wristwatch when he ran his 40 today, so I guess it doesn't translate entirely.

Are you suggesting that if you applied to a hospital as a doctor you would go to the interview in scrubs?

Patch Adams would ... and he'd probably get the job.

This is no different than many, many organizations out there. The closest example is probably the armed services. You sign a contract and play by their rules, including wearing the proper uniform as prescribed in the regulations. Period. You can't just show up for morning formation wearing a pair of brogues because they look cooler.

Hell, even McDonald's has a uniform code. Most companies have apparel guidelines even if they don't enforce a uniform. Law firms don't wear uniforms, but how different are their dress codes from uniform regulations when you get down to brass tacks? You would see some sort of reaction if a lawyer showed up without a suit and tie, and you'd certainly see repercussions if (s)he continued to do so after being warned against doing so.

I think the NFL's uniform regulations are stupid in a lot of cases, and I think they pay far more attention to that than they do greater issues like player safety. But in the end they are what they are, and it's not really any different than any other place of business.

It would be funny as hell to see Lynch in the parking lot selling them to players, with a board showing his fine totals and removing a amount after every sale.

They really didn't care about the Pats fluffin or defluffin balls so it's pretty much set at this point - take it as you will - $

Gold is not one of the accepted colors in the Seahawks' palette. Thus, they cannot wear the color on their shoes.

Rog would look into this, but he's busy trying to figure out more ways to screw the old time players out of the $ they need and deserve for injuries suffered in the past.
