The Falcons announced Monday that they have released tackle Sam Baker, who started 61 games in six seasons with the team after being selected with the 21st overall pick in the 2008 draft.

Baker, 30, missed all of 2014 with a torn patellar tendon and has played in just four games the past two seasons due to knee issues. He had been a candidate to move inside and compete for the team's left guard job this summer.

Not totally unexpected, but somewhat of a surprise, given that the dead money is greater than what Baker's cap hit would have been this year. I thought Falcons might try him at guard and then wait until next year to release him.

Baker signed a 6 yr/$41.1 million deal with $18.25 million guaranteed two years ago, and he's had knee issues ever since. He started four years at LT for Carroll and was known to be a poor athlete who played with exceptional technique.

Now that we are into June, can't they carry over some of the hit, or did they change that rule?

His dead money for 2015 is roughly $2.8 mil.
Dead money for 2016 will be roughly $6.4 mil.

Both dead money hits are lower than what his cap cost would have been in either year.
Cap savings for 2015 are $4.5 mil.
Net cap savings for 2016 will be roughly $1.5 mil .... when balance of dead cap monies will be written off.

If you take a bigger cap hit this year / next year and have room against the cap then it is better than paying more overall by cutting him a year from now.

This at least saves cash otherwise due for this year so an overall saving

Insert obligatory reference to David Baker's wonderful commentary on how Pete kept his promise to take care of David's son, Sam and the other guys who played for him...

It's actually a pretty good read.

Thanks for posting that. I had never read that before and enjoyed reading it.

I really enjoyed it as well. It has the ring of truth to it.
