Makes sense. You go hard against a team, maybe even have some disdain for them on the field but off the filed it is back to just living. Some may take it further than that but you do what you have to in order to keep that mental edge.

Hard to have a rivalry when you lose what... 5 straight?

I miss the 49ers being competitive. As long as Chip Kelly is coach, we can look forward to boxing their ears.

-- I believe that these guys compete every week and play to win. Whether it is solely about money, or prestige, or just personal pride, and really believe the vast majority of them really do. I always feel pity for the "old schoolers" who get angry that these players, in all the sports for that matter, actually socialize. Hated the Broncos, but loved Steve Atwater. Hate the hers but love Navarro Bowman. These types of players are looking to take you head off your shoulders, but then will help you glue it back on. This old tired notion that this level of play can only be gained through hatred, is an idea whose time has come and gone.

-- Fan bases are a different story.
