I think you're being unrealistically optimistic thinking that a mere scolding will make the same people who couldn't spell "Carroll" correctly after 14 years get "Macdonald" right when there are very similar and more-familiar names like McDonald and MacDonald.

Back when "Shaquille Griffen" was on the team, I frequented the Seahawks-fan site with the silly name. Since Lockette had retired, I figured Lockett didn't need the nickname "No-E" anymore, so I wanted to start using it for Shaquill Griffin. Y'know, 'cause there's no "e" in "Shaquill" or "Griffin." It didn't catch on, so I kept seeing trying-to-sound-knowledgeable posts about Shaquille Griffen.

EDITED TO ADD: And I was so, so wrong about Lockett not needing the nickname "No-E" anymore in 2017. I still read posts around here from people talking about "Lockette," a guy who retired eight years ago.
