Did the 49ers make a smart move here? I can't believe that the Broncos are that dumb. They wouldn't get rid of Gregory unless they felt he really couldn't contribute.

He's been largely ineffective this year, ranked 106th by PFF:

Nice way for the Broncos to flip the bird to the Hawks for fleecing them if Gregory still has anything left.

That ESPN article states that the 49'ers are $40 million under the cap...

"While the 49ers have around $40 million in salary cap space, their hope is to roll most of that over to future years so they can re-sign key players like wideout Brandon Aiyuk, who is set to play on the fifth year of his rookie deal in 2024.

49'ers are the 12th oldest team in the league!
How can they be so loaded, and also still be $40 million under the cap?

Possibly because they are giving the majority to a few players (Bosa, Hargrave, Samuel, etc) and the rest are either minimum salary contracts or on rookie deals (this includes Purdy).

They restructured everyone and didn't do anything with the money. They freed up money for this year and next year and hosed the future years.
