Dre’Mont Jones to the Seahawks

The Seahawks were not shy about using their cap space during free agency. In addition to Geno Smith’s big contract extension, they made Dre’Mont Jones one of the highest-paid defensive ends in the NFL.

Jones’ contract is worth up to $51 million with $23 million in guaranteed money. He is making just slightly more than Chandler Jones and a fraction less than Cameron Jordan. Those are two of the most well-decorated pass rushers in the NFL, having multiple Pro Bowl and AP All-Pro team selections on their resumes.

While the Seahawks are bringing in Jones to wreak havoc in the trenches, his ability to defend against the run leaves a lot to be desired. Dre’Mont Jones has posted a 50.9 run defense grade or lower from PFF in three of his first four seasons in the NFL.

Jones had exceeded 63 percent of his available defensive snaps taken for games in which he appeared prior to last season (81 percent). Whether it be coincidentally or not, he ended last season on IR due to a hip injury. Seattle is paying Jones to be a full-time NFL player who is expected to make an instant impact on the defensive side of the ball.

While he has shown glimpses, it remains to be seen if he can live up to the expectation the Seahawks have set with this contract.

You look at what he has done in the past. You look at his age, injury history, and consistency. This is how the NFL works. They pay the difference makers, and this guy has a history of being a difference maker. He also plays a position that warrants cap investment. No one can predict injuries, but assuming he holds up, this looks like a very wise investment. He also addresses one of Seattle's biggest weaknesses. Barring the draft, Jones really is their premier off-season acquisition. He is an upgrade over any defensive lineman on their roster of the last five years. Perhaps since Bennett and Avril. This is an example benefit of swapping Wilson's projected salary for Geno's current salary.

What is there not to like? Except for a slow off season with a need to talk about something.

Dre'Mont Jones plus Brandon Jordan should equal good success.

This is why New Yorkers that go to bed by 10PM should not write about West Coast sports.

Jones is 26 and an up and comer.
Geno played like a top 5 QB last year.

Both are on team-friendly 3 year deals.
Both can be cut in 2024 with a manageable cap hit.

Jones' contract may be a bargain if it is re-examined a year or two from now.

Pure BS. Two Seahawks contracts as the riskiest? I see a lot more that I would call risky. What about Daniel Jones for $160 milliion/4 years? Or signing a 30-year-old Javon Hargrave for $84 million/4 years? What about the Broncos paying $88 million/5 years for a right tacke?

You get asked to write an article about 5 FA moves that may backfire --- so you pick 5 contracts at random. For that they pay you $50 .... and then we link it here and talk about it. I love the internet, but it comes at a cost.

My thoughts? They guy who wrote this has no idea how the Hawks are going to use Jones. Every player in the NFL has strong points and weak points the secret to success is identifying a playrrs strengths and integrating those strengths in the scheme putting that player in position for success. The Seahawks do that very well. Is Jones a risk? There are no FA signings that are guarenteed to be successful period but more than that, its all about motivating that player to be at his best and no one does that better than Pete Carroll.

Those are my thoughts.
