This kind of contract is, in my opinion, one of the biggest weaknesses of the salary cap structure. The notion that any starting QB that signs nets himself the highest contract in the league, no matter how good he is, is ludicrous. Trevor Lawrence gets $55 million a year, so Tua will be pushing for $57 million a year. Not based on their relative talents, just "next man up".

Meanwhile, the actual best QB in the league, Mahomes, is sitting at $45 million a year. That, in my opinion, should be setting the bar. Not just who is the next "franchise QB" to sign. I think we've elevated a lot of "NFL starter talent" to "Franchise QB" status that don't deserve it.
QBOFTF?
This is why I never want one.. Just bridge em

I'm inclined to agree. Maybe that will be soon be Howell. If Macdonald & Co's formula with Seattle proves highly successful, guess what Geno's agent is going to be thinking. Unlike the Jags, my preference is to be able to afford 52 other A- to C+ players who work well together as a team to be competitive against any other opponent.

Those bottom feeders had the same record as the Seahawks last year
Cool, the third [edit, fourth time] time they won 8 or more games in the last decade. Give em a medal.

The alternative was to tag him for two years, but the way QB salaries have escalated, this contract will look cheap three years from now, if he produces.
