I was honestly unsure what I would find when I went to look at the data for the last five years, but here it is.
Conference championship games by year
2021-2022
AFC Bengals 27 #7-O, #17-D - Chiefs 24 #4-O, #8-D
NFC Rams 20 #8-O, #15-D - Niners 17 #13-O, #9-D
2020-2021
AFC Chiefs 38 #6-O, #11-D - Bills 24 #2-O, #16-D
NFC Buccaneers 31 #3-O, #8-D - Packers 26 #1-O, #13-D
2019 - 2020
AFC Chiefs 35 #5-O, #7-D - Titans 24 #10-O, #12-D
NFC Niners 37 #2-O, #8-D - Packers 20 #15-O, #9-D
2018 - 2019
AFC Patriots 37 #1-O, #7-D - Chiefs 31 #4-O, #24-D
NFC Rams 26 #2-O, #20-D - Saints 23 #3-O, #14-D
2017-2018
AFC Patriots 24 #2-O, #5-D - Jaguars 20 #5-O, #2-D
NFC Eagles 38 #3-O, #4-D - Vikings 7 #10 O, #1-D
My takeaway, most teams in championship appearances are top 5 offensively. Of the 20 teams appearing in the last 10 Conference Championships, 13 are top 5 offense, only 2 are not top 10.
Defensively, only 4 of the 20 teams were in the top 5 defensively, interestingly all were in the same season (2017-2018). Of the 20 teams, 9 ranked outside the top ten in defense.
Perhaps the old adage of defense wins championships is faltering as the interpretation of the rules change more and more to favor the offense.
If you don't have both a top 10 D and a top 10 O, you may need some help from the officials to make it to the Super Bowl.
