Fire Andre Curtis prior to firing Ken Norton Jr.

Ken Norton is taking most of the heat, but the primary defensive issue is coverage busts in every look the Seahawks employ - the primary cover 3, their cover 2 looks, even their cover 1 man plays.

Seattle has a defensive passing game coordinator - Andre Curtis. Something, somewhere is preventing the defense from playing with enough chemistry to stay even basically sound with regards to assignments. This is the antithesis of a "do your job" defense right now, indicating that there are multiple issues.

For that reason, I think starting lower on the chain with firings would be best, if they were to fire anyone. Andre should be first on the chopping block, as his focus is the area that's primarily sabotaging the defense.

PS: No I am not endorsing Norton or absolving him of blame. Just saying that there's probably a more effective coaching change to be made prior to reaching the step of firing the DC.

787, that was my feeling after the Bills game. I think that needs to happen. And then, we need a bit higher ceiling players in a few areas. Glad someone else is also talking about this. :irishdrinkers:

Here are some other candidates:

Nick Sorenson: Secondary and Nickel specialist

Damoine Lewis: Defensive assistant

And here's the kicker and the potential solution:

Aaron Curry: Defensive assistant/linebackers

Not that I'm advocating for people to become unemployed, but is it a coincidence that our defense falls off the cliff when Aaron Curry joined? Everything he touches is a failure. Kind of like myself now that I think about it...
Fire Aaron Curry!!

Generally, when your boss is incompetent, it is very hard for even a solid professional to steer the team into safe waters.

And when you make a move, you need to make the move most likely to improve on the results or fix the problem. If Norton is the issue, firing Curtis does very little. If Curtis is the problem, Norton would notice and resolve if he is capable or competent (he is neither).

If both are the problem this is hardly a relevant fix since new DCs generally come in with their own staff in the first place and all existing staff members are evaluated in a 'keep or discard' strategy anyway.

Norton is still the issue.

Removing Curtis probably does not fix much. Unless we somehow replaced him with Kris Richard (which would be a demotion for Richard) and Kris secretly helped Norton not by the worst DC even in history? Then maybe removing Curtis would help.

Otherwise, no, it would just distract from the issue that Norton having a job as our DC is the primary problem for the Seahawks.

I'm with Twisted Husky. It's an entire scheme issue. Get rid of KNJ first.

If it’s a scheme issue, as you say, then it’s Pete’s scheme not KNJ. So how does firing KNJ solve the problem? Will you then be suggesting to fire Pete?

I think that we need to bring a new DC in and Pete should fully turn the reins over to him. He needs to let go of his control of the D. Yes some blame lies on Pete. But KNJ is the DC and is partly responsible for this no matter what. When you have the worst D of all time you need to make changes, period. Fire Curtis too but I don't see firing him as more urgent than Norton. We need a big change in D coaching, and it should start with the DC. Even if Pete won't relinquished control of the D (he probably won't), get someone new in here at DC to try and mix things up. KNJ has never succeeded as a DC in this league, ever

Dwayne Walker would be a tremendous addition to Seahawk coaching staff as an assistant coach/secondary. He has coached under Pete Carroll at USC and has experience in both zone and man systems. Plus he also prefers the tall corners and length that the Seahawks covet. He helped develop Ramsey in Jax and Denzel Ward in Cleveland into pro bowlers. It seems like a perfect match. If I was PC, I’d be bringing him in right now.

Well, most of the breakdowns are happening in coverage, and Curtis is the pass defensive coordinator. It's a fairly large role, and he oversees the minutiae of the coverage scheme. They're not fulfilling basic assignments and blowing coverages. It's very possible a change at that spot specifically could tighten up the defense considerably.

The single best thing Seattle could do right now on defense is eliminate the bulk of coverage busts caused by incorrect fulfillment of assignments. I'd argue that firing Curtis has a better change of fixing that quickly than firing Norton does.

Anything.

A new specialist is needed to oversee implementation of the coverage schemes. Curtis isn't cutting it. The majority of the issues are execution based, and they're mental errors.

What about our strength and conditioning coach? I hear he's pretty bad as well.

KNJ is still first...but, let's throw this guy in here too.

Yeah... the injury bug coming out in full force for multiple seasons is concerning, to say the least. Fair to assume something is being done highly inefficiently in the Strength + Conditioning dept.
