Have Bennett and Avril flip flopped?

After the first 5-6 games it appeared that Michael Bennett was the best acquisition we made this offseason while Avril was in on very few plays. The last month though it seems that Bennett's production has dropped off significantly while Avril has been very impressive. Not sure Bennett's fall off was due to his injury when he went to the hospital. Whatever the case it will be interesting to see how these 2 finish up the year and who we decide to try and re-sign.

Can anyone comment who has been the best DE between Bennett, Avril and Clemons?

It may just be that Bennett is receiving a lot more attention from opposing teams causing other gaps to free up for Avril, Mebane, Clem, etc.

Probably Bennett overall but Avril is making a case.

It's streaky/cyclical. None of these guys are Reggie White Dominant. Avril may have some familiarity having played the Vikes twice a year prior to this.

But all our guys will make big plays. And allow each other to do so, in turn.

They are are all creating CHAOS in he backfield with pressure and QB hits. With that said, if Bennett didn't lose the sacks in the Atlanta game due to penalties, there wouldn't be a question who has been the "most effective".

Chris is still a monster even though his sack totals are not on par with the last three years.

Avril already has three forced fumbles this year. It's amazing how consistently he's able to do that over his career.

Slapping at the ball is a discipline. It really is.

Bennett is still doing very well. He was in a few run plays for loss/short gain. He also had some QB pressures.

Avril dropped back into coverage more this game than I've seen him do previously. As for Avril doing better....people seem to forget that he missed almost the entire offseason with that hammy issue. It was going to take him some time to acclimate to the system and the players around him; espeically with almsot no reps during the OTA's and TC. Typical fan impatience....we want to see results NOW.

Irvin is going to be another one I think will get better over the year. He was in on a few hurries as well this game.

Avril dropped a pick this game too. Funny, we dropped at least 2 if not 3 picks this game.

Probably already stated, but Avril is a fast guy and he was facing a huge tackle in Loadholt....that speed played a huge factor today IMO. I am getting tired of seeing Bennett jumping too early though.

Unless Cliff Avril can rush the passer from the DT spot on nickel downs like a beast than he should'nt be compared. pressure off the edge was never really the big problem

Avril has been the cause of quite a few turnovers, but he's definitely not an every down player right now. It seems like Bennett is the better run stopper of the two. I don't think you could say they've been flops because of the attention they get from the opposing offensive line. Their presence frees up DT's (Clinton McDonald) and blitzing linebackers to bring a pass rush. The fact of the matter is that our team has so many good pass rushers that they may end up each having a stat sheet that isn't that great, but the team as a whole is certainly putting more pressure on opposing QB's.

What are you talking about?! Don't you know as fans we have to jump on one guys bandwagon and declare the other guy a bum? What kind of fan are you?!?!

No, seriously. Exactly what Leif said.

Bennett has been consistently our best pass rusher all season and Avril is gradually turning into our best pure edge rusher.

No flop at all. Not even close. Terrific additions.

Bennett has played a lot of snaps. Last week he was in for Red. I suspect he is pretty beat up. I think after the week off he will have some more fuel in the tank.

Given that I think Pete will probably want to resign Bennett after this season, I think the real question for next year is who is better Avril or Clemons. Both will have a huge cap number next year and most likely we can only keep one.
