Boomerang punts?

"The boomerang is an effective way of keeping the punt away from a dynamic returner. Against the Bears, Cohen was set up to receive on his left side of the field. Dickson angled himself as if he was kicking in Cohen's direction, but he kicked across his body and the punt took a turn. It bounced on the other side of the field and out of bounds for a 53-yard net."

I am wondering why there has not been a player that kicks and punts? one player for both jobs?

Different skill sets, muscles are different for each and technique, would be a rare player that in these times could do both at a NFL level consistently.

He's a soccer player, I'm sure he could hone those muscles and skills.

Ignore the facts, look at what a Punter does and what a Kicker does, different motion and different powers points, the nuances are also different.

If it was easy, someone would have done it by now. Maybe someone will in the future. But it will take a special someone.

Differences in physical mechanics seem obvious, but it may just be that it's really hard to keep the two techniques from messing with each other. Kicking is heavily about trying to do everything as repeatable as possible over and over; there's enough random (to random-ish) variables that the kicker can't optimize. It might be really hard to try to do the kicking mechanics properly and consistently and not have it interfere with the punting mechanics.

Before the NFL changed the kickoff rule, there were still kickoff specialists on some teams. Some field goal kickers weren't that good at kickoffs but they could get other guys to do it; and those two things are a lot closer than kicking and punting in general.

In the same vein, why is there a roster position taken up by a long snapper? Most teams will have a starting center and a backup center on their active roster, why can't the backup center also train, practice & become the long snapper? When I played, many moons ago, the center didn't have much problem with short or long snaps, they were part of the centers job.
Slightly different mechanics, but still just snaps of variable length. Also, the current shotgun formations & some wildcat plays require longer snaps than snapping the ball while the QB is directly behind the center. The game is changing in a lot of ways and roster positions are more important than ever, so why do all teams have a dedicated long snapper taking up a valuable roster spot?

Did you snap footballs in the NFL? Whatever level you were doing it at, did you ever make an error?

If a long snapper misses one, maybe two snaps all season, they're probably done. Career probably over. The expectation is zero mistakes. If NFL centers could pull that off without error they'd use the roster spot for something else. Failed snaps on these plays are absolutely catastrophic; they almost always will result in loss of points, turnovers, or giving the other team insanely good field position.

Long snappers, who are demonstrably better at it, likely spend almost their entire practice regimen snapping the ball and providing coverage on punts. Centers have to do all the offensive line stuff, which is a full time job. A center that can pull it off 95% of the time isn't good enough. You need a guy who will do it 100% or very close to it.

Most long snappers also tend to be better in punt coverage because they aren't specialized in being offensive lineman. A lot of these guys are 50-80 pounds lighter than their center counterparts.

My friend who played LB in college managed a decent-length career as an NFL long snapper. He definitely was lighter and faster than your typical center and could tackle.

I was wondering if a drop kick on the kickoff is like an onside kick and connot be fair caught? And could it be used as such?

Yeah, you're right.

Well I suppose when you are at this the highest level, there is no room to err and only the best is allowed.

I dont think it would be wise to do so. If you have a place kicker get injured, then you can adapt a bit. If he does both, then you are screwed for the rest of the game.
