He's great in pass coverage, questionable in run D though IMO. I saw a lot of replays on the Saints 10+ yard runs and Malcolm had missed his gap assignments... Anyone else notice this? Hopefully it gets figured out this week!

I noticed that on several plays. IF we can get KJ back that will help!!

At first glance I felt Smith had a poor game overall, as he was picked on for a lot of underneath routes towards the left sideline.

I might have mistaken whose assignment it was, but it certainly looked as if nearly every pass attempt in the 4th quarter was going his way.

And the 49ers sealed the game by running Malcom Smith's way with that gore run and Kaepernick's 3rd-and-7 run that went for 7 yards.

I think it's Wright and not Percy that's the x-factor.

From what I saw, Bruce Irvin wasn't any better. Wagner was the only linebacker that stood out and made plays. They must have done a good job in coverage, because "I'm Jimmy" only had one catch.

Is Schofield any good against the run? I liked what I seen from him in the preseason how come we don't play him as much?

KJ is supposed to be back this week, right? I hope he's healthy. Smith is a good LB, but I don't think he's ready to be the starter full-time. I like when he comes in for specific packages.

Yeah Smith has a tendency to overrun his gap in the run defense and it has hurt us in the past. Getting KJ back would greatly help.

Malcolm Smith is fantastic against the pass, fantastic against screens but often gets confused against the run.

Every game he seems to gets better, I have believe he learned a lot Saturday.

Im with you Dope. Why no Schofield? The guy showed all kinds of promise in preseason and in limited opportunities, though usually from a rush end position. Smith gets absolutely swallowed up in the run defense and has a hard time shedding blocks in my eyes. He gets love for his picks, but leaves a ton to be desired in the other important phase of the game. JMHO

Watch close both smith and Irvin were playing deep. I suspect to help pass coverage as they had less fear of the NO run game. Both the OLBs are very low 4.5 guys with Wagner 4.55 is in there as well. If you are critical of their run D then you to be have to be fair, would you not agree that some of the holding the DB to less than 50 yards passing first half was due to them as well ?

Smith can't get off blocks at all. Even get a WR on him and it's over.

Pass coverage he's fast and seems to trail pretty good but run defense is horrible. Need the long arms of KJ to shed blocks and wrap up.

Wagner runs a consistent 4.4

Irvin ran a 4.5 officially, but he can hit 4.4 range: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8toZnju8qE
I dont know about Smith.

but I dont see what 40 times have to do with run defense. K.J. isn't necessarily fast or exceptionally athletic (4.75 in the 40 yd, 20 reps bench), he has very good discipline and gap control in the run game, rarely out of position, and his lengthy frame helps him fight off blockers better than Smith.

I am not implying KJ is not excellent Length is equal to leverage. Granted speed does not have much to do with run defense but a lot in pass defense. Smith and Irvin are superior at both.

IMO the best setup is KJ in the middle and Irvin/smith on one side Wagner the other.

Malcolm is 4.4-something. He was actually a running back in high school.
