As horrid as the play call was, it STILL should have been a TD. It required a phenomenal play from Butler to get the INT, and Lockette was the last WR I would want in that position for that play.

Butler was able to make such a great play because he knew it was coming because...drum roll...that's all we ever run out of that formation according to Patriots players.
It was absolutely a great play. But if there's some sort of notion that the great play by the defender is something we just shrug our shoulders at, that notion should be dispelled.
Lockette and Kearse only failed during the play itself (if you call Kearse not pushing through Browner a failure and you blame Lockette for being what he is - a special teams player who wears a number in the 80s). Bevell managed to fail in all the play calls out of that formation prior to the play, as well as on this particular play call itself.

Think about this for a minute.
You are a fringe player, you have been cut endless times, you are given a chance to make the play of your life, your name is called ... and you act like you don't care? Lockette didn't act like he even wanted that ball.
I doubt he is coming back.

But man he had inside position at that point.....
As bad as that play call was, I still contest that ends up as a TD or a drop 999 times out of 1000.
Gut. Wrenching.
