Sounds more like he's going back to what works and had been the defensive philosophy for years prior

Sounds like they aren’t changing a thing from last year other than personnel. Much of it is semantics. They run multiple DL concepts through the season.

When will Pete learn ?

Learn what exactly?
Seems he has learned to create more complex coverage schemes as the single high was getting schooled. Seems he learned that he needed better DL to stop the run.

I think most of their messaging so far has hinted that they're doubling back to what they'd run prior. They actually ran significantly less 3-4 in 2022 than prior seasons when looking at the charting and whatnot.

Here's the charting counting the snaps where they had a guy aligned at 0-tech. This is a key indicator of a 3-4 adjacent front rather than the 2-man nickel front that featured heavily and got ran all over last year.

But yeah, it's always going to be multiple. Always has.

EDIT: To clarify, the picture shows 2020 at the top and 2022 at the bottom.

I think the biggest change is the emphasis on players who can play both 3-4 and 4-3, which will help disguise their defense.

Most defenses don't play very much base defense these days. 3-4 and 4-3 are more nebulous terms. Most defense are operating under different sub packages. For example, Seattle used a ton of 2-4-5 last year. Blaming Seattle's poor defense on 3-4 is misguided.
